I heard the door creak open and familiar foot steps walking into the house. I no longer cradled Rosie in my arms, for she had fallen asleep a while earlier.
I looked up to see a broken, stressed face. I ran into Ponyboy's arms, and he held me tighter than ever.
"I'm so, so sorry, Ponyboy. I'm so sorry."
He looked at me confused and wiped my tears away with his thumb. He tried to be the man even though he probably felt the opposite.
"Why are you sorry, darling? It's not your fault. It's no ones fault. It just happened, okay? It just-"
He began to break down. He fell to the floor and so did I. I rubbed his back to try to make him feel better. He was breathing heavily and sobbing uncontrollably. Almost like a baby, but he had a reason to cry.
"It's okay, Pony. Everything's okay. Don't worry, okay, I'm here."
I said to him. He began taking deep breathes and I wiped his tears away. I kissed him on the side of his head, and rubbed his back more. It helped him keep calm. Soda told me to do this sort of thing when he has nightmares, which is less often.
"Lucy, I-I just don't know how I feel. I've lost so many people, but I still feel so sad. They died in a car wreck at around 5. I don't know what happened and I don't want to know. All I know is, my parents died like that, and I don't want Rosie to grow up without parents, Lucy, I just don't. I don't know, Soda said that Kitty's parents didn't want her baby, so one of us is gonna have to take her unless she goes to a little girls home or somethin', but,
I don't want that to happen. She needs to grow up with someone. So, I told the gang we would take her."
I felt my eyes widen. I never thought that we would take her in. I thought maybe Darry and Shanna would take her.
"I know it's a lot, but, Lucy, I love her and you do too. Just think about it. I'm sorry this had to happen, but, things happen."
He said. I got up and began to pace. I felt my stomach flip, and I got real scared. I slowly walked over to the bed, where I began to shiver. Ponyboy came and laid in bed with me. He noticed I was cold and took me into his arms. He rubbed on my arms, making them warmer.
"Everything's gonna be okay. I promise."
I buried my face into his chest, where I cried until I fell asleep in his arms.
