Love is a funny thing when you think about it. You meet some stranger and think, “Oh, they’re odd”, but after getting to know them, you feel this deep connection, and eventually, you come to the point where you can’t stand them, yet you can’t be without them. Yup, love sure is funny. But what’s funnier is the person who you end up falling in love with. I guess you can call my story the classic Romeo and Juliet, except Juliet is actually a guy…..and no one dies at the end. Also, we don’t actually fall in love with each other immediately and then go out for 3 days. In fact, I went a long time without seeing him. It all started at the beginning of senior year in high school.
Summer ended, but since we lived in California, it didn’t seem like it. School had just started up again, and we had already spent a week learning about useless stuff. My best friend Cameron Daley, or Cam as I like to call her, was in all of my classes, so I had someone to goof off with for the whole year. Cameron had a brother who was a junior in college, and he didn’t go back until the next week. After Friday, when the bell rang, Cam and I went to her house.
“Ahh Harry, I can’t believe how much homework we have! And can you believe how mean Mr. Davis is? He already gave out a detention this week!”
I sat down on the sofa while Cam rested her head on my lap. Her ginger red hair tickled my legs and she reached her hands up and played with my hair. I sighed, “I know Cam, this year is gonna suck!” My eyebrows furrowed and I made a pouty face.
Just then, Cam’s brother walked in. “Aww look at the cute couple!”
We both looked at him with annoyance. “Shut up Josh!!” We said in unison.
Cam stood up and crossed her arms. “You know Harry’s gay, and besides, I’m into more punk. You know my style.”
I stood up next to Cam. “Hey! I can be punk if I want to be. I just prefer not to be. I prefer the more ‘classy’ style.”
Josh smirked and chuckled before coming between us and putting his arms around us. “What you guys need is a relaxation. You should come to the back-to-school party with me tomorrow at the SBU campus. It will be fun.” Cam and I both looked at each other and smiled.
The next day, I got ready for the party. It would be my first college party, so I was preparing for the worst. I didn’t want to look lame, so I put on my black pants and brown boots along with a black shirt. I styled my hair up, so it wouldn’t cover my face. I put on some cologne and then I heard Josh shouting at me from outside. We drove to the campus and the minute I saw it, I started freaking out. People were everywhere and all the girls seemed to be half naked. Most of the guys had no shirts on and people were drunk already. “You guys ready for the best night of your lives?”
“Yeah!!” Cam pumped her fist in the air and took my hand as we left the car. We got in the building and already there were college girls asking for my number. “Sorry mates, I play for the other team.” Cam yanked my arm and put her mouth to my ear.
“Wow Harry, all these girls are all over you. Too bad you ain’t straight.” We both chuckled and then some guy interrupted us and asked Cam to dance. As she was leaving, I pulled her aside and told her to be careful. Knowing Cam, she was very trusting of anyone, even complete strangers.
I walked over to a table where people were doing body shots. I never understood the point of it; it seemed very disgusting if you ask me. I looked from behind the crowd, but the room was so crowded and everyone was pushing that I ended up in the front.
“Who’s next! How about you kid?” I was distracted by the people around me, and then I looked up. That was the first time I saw him. For first impressions, he sure made a huge one, but not a good one. He had tattoos all over his arms, piercings on his ears, and he seemed stuck up. His hair was sort of messy, probably from the beanie he was wearing. He held his hand out to me, and I unmindedly took it. “Say mate, you new? I’ve never seen you here before.”
