Chapter 4
The night was warm and cozy, as I waited for myself to fall asleep. Jinx’s words replayed over and over in my head.
“Humans. Power hungry humans. Some choose to leave out the laws out. So the creations attacked and killed their creators, humans. But being the creatures you all are you never gave up. And when the end of all humanity was so near, there was a final battle. In that last battle the Earth was wiped clean. Humans started over again this time without the machines they once couldn’t live without.”
I listened to the sounds of Poppy sleeping in the other room. In a few hours I would be off to meet the King of this future. To find out what this premonition is about.

“Alex!” I was pushed and pulled. “He sure does sleep a lot. Alex!”
“I’m up! I’m already dressed for school,” I sat up and opened my eyes. I wasn’t in my room, in my bed. I wasn’t even in Poppy’s house on her ratty worn out couch anymore.
A wagon, I was in large wooden wagon. Poppy sat up front driving a horse while Jinx sat beside me. That girl must be pretty strong to be carrying me around.
“The Kingdom of Eloi awaits,” Poppy said eagerly. Going back meant that she could return home and be with her family.
“They know we’re coming?” If they knew when I was supposed to show up, why would they have people waste years of their lives waiting on nothing.
“Yes. Well, no actually. They have no idea we are even on our way there…today.”
“We should be there before nightfall,” Jinx said as I went to sit up front with Poppy. We were on a dirt road. One that wasn’t used very often, easy to see from the grass that had grown up along with other kinds of vegetation.
“What’s Eloi like?”
“It’s amazing,” Poppy breathed. “I had only been there once before, when I was sent to Dragon Meadow to wait for you,” she smiled at me. “My home is in Fairmere. It’s far away from here. Fairmere is a very poor place nothing like Eloi.”
“Eloi is the biggest and Oldest Kingdom in the world. The most advanced too, since the outlawing of technology. But it is a place full of wonders and has a beauty that must be seen with ones own eyes,” Jinx said while he sat between us. I fought the urge to pet and stroke his fur.
“How do you know so much about Eloi?” I found my question stupid when it left my mouth. Jinx had been around before the kingdom was even a thought in anyone’s mind. Of course he would know everything about it.
“I live in Eloi. The Princess keeps me as a companion. Her and the Queen are the only ones in the entire Kingdom who know what I am. And the Princess asked me to go with Poppy so she wouldn’t have to be alone,” he added that last part to answer my questioning look.
“How are the leaders chosen?” I asked just to past the time.
“Birthright. Although it is a matriarchal society, King Audrey still makes some decisions while Queen Sorrel mostly tends to the needs of the people.”
“So, the Queen is the one who is in charge?” I made a sour face.
“Yes. She is the bloodline of royalty. Very different from your time,” he said knowing full well that that was the case. I could only think of a handful of female leaders and those were few and far in between.
“Definitely.”
We didn’t talk anymore. I guess because there wasn’t really anything left to be said. I would just have to wait and see. As time went on the land was becoming nothing but open fields and meadows with trees sprinkled around.
Poppy gave me a turn a driving the horse while she took a nap. I wanted to ask if the horse was really a horse or was it like Jinx. But I didn’t because if it was like Jinx I figured it would have talked by now. Jinx told me which way to go even though the horse appeared to know where it was headed.
We stopped at a river for the horse to drink. Poppy had brought bread, oatmeal and honey for us to eat. I can’t image having to live on only that for a year. We had to drink the water from the river. It had a fresher, cleaner taste then I thought it would. I guess when the Earth was wiped clean, it really did clean up. The hundreds of years of no pollution really turn the planet around. Poppy tells me its summer even though it feels like early spring.
After our heavy meal we set off again. I had a sense we were nearing the Kingdom from the worn out look of the road. My guess was reassured when Poppy said. “We’ll be there soon.”
Within an hour or so I could see the tops of the highest points in the Kingdom. Poppy was finding it hard to keep still. Even Jinx seemed to be excited to return to the kingdom. I shared their excitement but I also had a fear that was all my own.
