The ward was noticably more desolate than any other I'd seen. It was almost abandoned besides a stray nurse skitting acrosd the corridor. I used my pass to get through the ward marked 'k2' and saw another desk. This woman was far from the other. Her wrinkles set in her skin like deep scars that dragged her smile down to a frown. She was chewing bubblegum and from here I could see two full ash trays. Oh the irony... Her gold hoops tangled in her blonde hair which was strung up into a pony tail and her pink nails turned the page of the gossip magazine.
A chubbier version of me in full suit and tie lay on multiple posters instructing that the police be called if I'm found here. My sideburns lined my face and slick back mousy brown hair looked nothing like it does now. Feeling like a different person to the black and white poster copy, I trusted myself to approach the desk.
I could hear her lips smack as she chewed her gum openly and she didn't even look up at me.
"Name?"
"John Clark." I said confidently and she finnaly looked away from her magazine. Her brow furrowed and she picked up a small copy of the poster.
"You look kinda like him... Any ID?"
"None other than my law degree. We don't normally have to bring much more." she put the poster down and returned to her slouched position.
"Whatever. Have fun." she opened the doors without even looking at my certificate. I tried not to let the confusion over come me and rushed through the doors before they shut.
The ward felt abandoned, I could only see one sign pointed towards the double doors. Criminal care. As I stepped slowly towards the doors I felt a sense of guilt set in my stomach. It's totaly my fault Pete is in here. I'm the one who ran the court against him. The one time I succeed I fail at everything else a hundred times worse. He might even be dead when I get in there. Or hate me. I haven't seen him since they took him to die. My legs stopped. Controled by the cowardly thought to turn back.
The lone nurse pushed through the doors behind me and I turned slightly to meet her smirking glance. She must know who I am. Oh shit I'm fucked. She went through another set of doors and I sped down the hallway. As I got to the doors, I saw a man twice my size sat behind the door. I slid to a halt, ducking beneath the glass of the doors and hid in a separate doorway.
The nurse returned and as she somehow didn't see me. Instead she turned through the doors and spoke to the guard. As she pointed out through the glass I knew she was telling him I was here. Together they headed towards me and I could feel my heart beating like a drum. This was it, and Pete wouldn't even know I had tried to save him. I stopped breathing as they pushed the doors open. But she ushered him down the hallway, safely past me. I couldnt comprehend what had just happened but I didn't have much time.
The doors swung open and I held them there as I scanned the room. There were so many beds I didn't have time to put a number on it but on the left of the room I could only see one sleeping stranger.
"Patty?" My head flicked to the right of the room where Pete looked in perfect condition. I breathed out and began to smile as I rushed towards him."Why are you here?"
"Why do you think? I'm getting you out of here." I said pulling back from our hug to remove any machinery. I looked back at him only to see him slowly crying. "Pete? Oh Pete..."
"I never thought I'd see you again..." he whispered into my shoulder as I squeezed him tight.
"I'm here now." I pressed my lips gently against his and he smiled.
"That was nice. I've missed that." I smirked before calmly saying,
"Me too."
"Patrick you shouldn't be doing this." he said to me from across the room as I struggled to find him something to wear.
"Why shouldn't I huh?" he sighed as I found an old black dressing gown.
"It's illegal Patty," I scoffed as I turned back to him.
"Really Pete? No way!" I laughed as I tucked him into the robe. He smirked weakly before looking up at me through his fringe. I kissed him once more, for longer before dragging him out through the doors.
