"Yemi what do I do with the extra makeup?"
"Uh," the girl was sweeping loose and freshly cut hair off the floor, her movements fast because she was so ready to leave, "if you can find a box or something to put it in, that would be great."
"Okay," her best friend and partner -- Nadiely -- nodded and retreated to the back of the store.
Yemi Khan was the owner of YK Cosmetics and hair, a local but very well known line of makeup that was now physically on the block. She was a YouTuber and cosmetologist in the making, getting many deals and even a few celebrity clients here and there.
Although, in high demand, she was still humble.
Only being twenty three and already a little stable enough to get a lease on a lot a few years ago and maintaining a new home really was the icing on the cake. She was so grateful for it all, looking back on how it all started.
Her best friend, Nadiely, was her partner and had her own line of natural hair products and wigs. Everything just kinda fell together when opening a salon as Yemi specialized in wigs and weaves, while Nadiely specialized in natural hair care. It was perfect.
Yemi pulled out her camera and turned it on. She waited the few seconds it took to start up before recording. "Okay, guys, first day in the salon since reconstruction and it went so well and so smoothly. I'm very proud of myself--"
"And me--"
"And her," Yemi grinned and rolled her eyes, "I gave you all a tour already of the new design but I have to show the makeup section," she strolled over to another room and opened he door, "look at it, gorgeous. Me and Nadi will be beating faces so if ya want it done just contact me through my email which is listed in the description box, and right up here also," she pointed to a random part of the camera for editing later and smiled big, "now, ya girl is gonna grab something to eat, because I work too hard to not deserve it."
Yemi shut the camera off and put it in her bag. Nadiely was packing her things in the far corner, talking on the phone with who Yemi thought was her little boy toy. She rolled her eyes and smiled at her before throwing the bag over her shoulder and looking around the room.
"Yo! What the fuck?" They heard grunting and small screams from outside. Yemi looked out the window and gasped loudly, watching a man getting thrown on the ground by a much taller one, somebody's kid screaming and crying as he witnessed him getting hurt.
"God," Yemi put her bag down and ran outside, Nadiely following after, "hey! Get off of him!"
The man groaned in pain when Yemi kicked his crotch. He staggered back and almost fell, leaning against a car and catching his breath.
"Nadi, call the ambulance," Yemi glared as the man left without a word. She crouched down to the unconscious person, blood falling from his nose and his eyes closed shut. Yemi shook him but he didn't wake up.
"They're on the way, but you know how that is," Nadiely replied after a few minutes, shushing the little boy who calmed down just enough to where he wasn't screaming. Spectators crowded around and Nadiely backed them off when the paramedics came fifteen minutes later, checking the man's vitals and strapping him onto the gurney.
"Can you follow us in your car?" Yemi asked as they put the stranger in the back of the ambulance.
"Sure, sure, I'll just close up," Yemi picked up the little boy and looked at his face, not seeing anything that was a sign of hurt. He was fine.
"Are you okay?" Yemi got in the back with the man and kept the boy's face hidden. He couldn't be any older than five or six.
"I just want my daddy," he cried and sniffled onto her shirt, "tell him to wake up please."
"He will, he will, sweetie," Yemi shushed and rocked him side to side. The vehicle started to drive away and she sighed. "What's your name?"
"Can I trust you?"
"Of course," Yemi frowned at him, just now noticing how old and worn out his clothes were. They weren't good for this weather.
"My name is Jahdai," he replied easily.
"And what's your Dad's name?"
"Daddy," he made a face and she tried not to laugh. "But that mean man called him Zayn or something."
"Okay," she held him closer and looked at the man who's name was Zayn, "he'll be fine, Jahdai. Promise."
"Okay," he just smiled and hugged her lightly, his eyes closing as he tried to warm up.
She closed her eyes and kept wondering why she promised this boy something she didn't know a damn thing about.
