They began to call each graduate across the stage, and I zoned out again.
I looked over to see Melanie and Logan sitting with Melanie’s family.
I waved frantically, but she didn’t see me. I pulled my phone out of my bra and sent her a text.
“Did you just pull your phone out of your bra” Mason whispered to me.
“Yeah man, where else am I going to keep it?”
He rolled his eyes. “A purse?”
“That’s a lot of work to carry around a purse for a phone.”
“Mason, that’s enough” Rob’s voice said, sharply. “Stop being so disrespectful.”
Mason rolled his eyes and continued looking at me. I could see the fury in his eyes. “How am I being disrespectful?”
“You’re talking during an important graduation. This is your brother.”
Mason’s eyes bore into mine, his right arm twitching. “Right, of course.”
They lapsed into silence, and I squeezed his hand.
I cheered and hollered as Alyssa walked across the stage, her arm still in a cast. Poor baby girl.
“Face the stage” Rob said to Mason. “That is enough of your misbehavior.”
Mason slowly turned to face the stage.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you” Rob murmured.
Mason opened his mouth to say something, but he snapped it shut. “How about we make this bearable by just ignoring each other” Mason asked, in a steady voice, as he continued staring straight forward.
“I will not have that tone used with me.”
Mason slowly stood up. “Excuse me, but I’m going anywhere else but here. I’ll be back in time to see Haley and Cody.”
“If you leave this room, I will make sure you regret it” Rob said, in a low deep voice that made shivers run up my spine.
“I’d like to see you try” Mason answered, in the same tone of voice. He left.
I looked at Ethan, who was grinding his jaw in thought.
“Excuse me guys, I’ll be right back” Carson said, standing up. He grabbed his crutches and exited the same way Mason had.
I risked a glance at Rob, who was facing the stage, practically oozing out anger.
“And that’s why we separate them” Ethan whispered to me, barely loud enough for me to hear.
I impatiently waited for Carson and Mason to return. I saw Melanie shooting me confused glances, and she held up her cell phone.
I pulled out my iPhone and checked my texts. I had five new messages.
Hey babe, totally didn’t see you there.
Whoa, what’s going on over there?
Where did Mason go?
Where did Carson go?
What the hell is going on?!?!?!?!
I chuckled at her impatience, and then realized how similar we were.
Rob & Mason had a fight I texted back with the short and sweet version. No need for extra details, though I’m sure she’ll get them out of me anyways.
