When Kellin and I walk into the school the next day, it feels like we're on top of the world and nothing could bring us down. Kellin had woken up in an amazing mood and even smiled at the mirror this morning. I'm ecstatic. I can't believe how much progress he's made just from one therapy session. If I ever meet the lady who opened my baby's eyes, I need to thank her.
"So I talked to Papa yesterday about quitting the team." I begin, grinning.
"And?" Kellin says hopefully.
"He said that there's nothing more manly than caring for the one you love and putting them before your every need. He said that I didn't need football to prove myself." I explain and Kellin lets out a little excited squeal.
"So you're quitting?" He asks.
I nod and he lets out another little squeal.
"I'm so happy for you Vic." He grins throwing his arms around me.
"It's all because of you Kell. Seriously, thank you." I smile.
"Anything for you Babe." He chirps and I flash him an adoring smile.
"Fuck, I love you." I breathe and he blushes a little.
"I love you too." He murmurs with a bright smile as we stop at his locker.
My stomach drops as I watch the smile fall from his face. I hadn't been paying enough attention to his locker to realize that there's insult-filled notes suck to it. His eyes scan them in horror and I reach for his hand but he just shakes me off. His face goes blank as he reaches up and grabs a note off of the locker then looks at it closely.
"This is what people really think of me?" He asks turning it towards me.
It reads 'Kill yourself freak'. I want to cry just looking at it.
"No Kell, this is probably just stupid kids who are trying to get a reaction out of you." I sigh.
"It happened yesterday too. It happened when I wasn't here as well, didn't it?" He asks. I can't tell if he's upset or not, he just seems emotionless right now.
I nod, answering his question truthfully.
I watch tears fill his eyes but a smile cracks onto his face. It's obviously forced. He picks off another note and turns it around.
"Coincidental, I did just last night." He laughs as tears cascade down his face.
'Eat a burger' is what the note says.
"Kell," I sigh pulling him into a hug. "It's okay. You don't have to hold it back. Just let it go. You'll feel a lot better. You have every right to be upset."
"But they're just stupid kids, right?" He whispers.
"That doesn't make their stupid words hurt any less." I whisper and that's when he relaxes and starts crying.
"Am I really a freak?" He chokes out.
"Of course not Kells. Don't listen to them. You've spent so many years listening to what other people thought of you only to find out that they're wrong. Don't let anyone tell you who you are, Kells." I explain.
He sniffs then pulls away and wipes his eyes.
"Thank you." He murmurs quietly as he kisses my cheek.
"You're very welcome Baby." I mumble, brushing my thumbs over his red cheeks, wiping away the excess tears.
I drop my hand then begin tearing off the rest of the notes. Kellin helps me and we carry them to the bin.
