**Fred’s POV**

“There’s nothing to work out,” George says, “I don’t trust her.”

Maddie’s eyes blaze green and I see Sirius tighten his grip around her shoulders.

“George,” Mr Weasley says, sounding a little shocked, “she did it to protect you!”

“I still don’t trust her,” George says.

“You know, George, you’re probably right,” Maddie says slowly, “not about this though.”

“About what, then?”

“Maybe I would’ve been better off with Fred,” she says, “he listens.”

George shoots a look at me and then glares at Maddie.

“You owe me,” Maddie says, “I listened to you when you had no one to back you up. I have people to back me up, so it just makes it easier for you.”

“I’m going home.”

I watch George walk out the door. A split second later I follow him.

“You never learn, do you?” I ask following him into his house.

“Fred, drop it.”

“No! She’s been one of my best friends for over seven years!” I yell, “she left everything to protect you! She left everything she believes in-

“If you see her, can you give her this?” he asks, handing me an envelope.

“What is it?” I ask, taking it.

“Divorce papers.”

“Oh, fu-”

“Language!” George scowls, covering Alithea’s ears. I throw the envelope onto the floor in disgust.

“I’m going to put Alithea to bed,” George says, “then I’m going to sleep.”
“Not until we’ve talked,” I say stubbornly, sitting down at the kitchen table and folding my arms across my chest. George walks upstairs and comes back down a few minutes later.

“You should go,” he says, “we have to patrol tomorrow.”

“George, you’ve been on edge ever since she left,” I point out, “you haven’t laughed and you’ve barely smiled. You’re not you anymore. I miss my brother.”

He looks at me evenly, not saying a word.

“I don’t understand why it’s so hard for you to believe her,” I continue, “it makes sense! More sense than her just joining him!”

“I don’t want her in my life,” he replies, leaning against the wall opposite me, “I don’t need her.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No, I don’t! Fred, I’ve spent the last few months learning how to be a single parent-”

“No,” I interrupt, “you’ve spent the last few months feeling angry and hurt and isolating yourself! You’ve spent the last few months feeling sorry for yourself and hating her.”

George opens his mouth to argue then pauses.

“See?” I smirk, “I’m right and you still love her.”

“Fred, I don’t want her-”

“Not right now, but you do need her,” I say, “you miss her, don’t you? Miss cuddling up to her at night. Miss laughing and joking with her. Miss that way she looks at you…”
