phil goes back to the same coffee shop the next day, as promised. at 12:10 he gets up to leave and in that moment a bell rings signaling somebody coming through the door.

the name comes to phil's mind without any thought. comes as soon as he looks into the eyes of the boy, now man, he knew years ago. how long ago had that been?

they were both twenty now. phil didn't known whether to cry in happiness, sadness, or anger.

dan approached phil as phil sat back into his seat. dan sat slowly in the seat across from him.

"hi again, phil."

his voice may have been lower but he was still the same dan. dan also seemed quieter and phil could sense an aura of sadness.

"would you like me to buy you a coffee, dan?"

to dan, drinking their coffee and talking about themselves felt like meeting an aunt you hadn't seen since you were a baby. though, he was still happy to see phil, despite the awkwardness.

"why the hell did you ask me what my middle name was right after you almost drowned?"

"hey, i saw your name in the phone book but all that was there for your middle name was a little initial. it dawned on me that if i died without knowing your middle name i wouldn't have been able to live with myself...die with myself?"

"mmkay then."

dan and phil continue conversing with each other and drinking their coffees. before leaving they have a brief, yet awkward, hug. they then leave dan going to his current apartment and phil going to his childhood home. once home dan texts phil.
