"Luke, you can tell me. It's always safe with me," I tell him.
"I know, but I don't want to scare you away," he jokes.
"Nothing you say will scare me away," I smile.
"I wouldn't be so sure of that," he says, no humor left in his tone.
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, I promise," I take his hand in mine.
"Maybe a rain check on the dark history of Luke Hemmings?" he says, a faint smile coming onto his face.
"Definitely a rain check," I say, matching his expression.
"I really do have to go home. I was going to invite you over," he says. "Want to?" he offers.
"Will there be food involved?" I laugh.
"I wouldn't be a proper gentleman if there wasn't," he smiles.
"I'll just go tell my mom," I smile and go back into the house. She's sitting on her stool in the kitchen, reading a magazine. "I'm going to go over to Luke's for a while. Is that okay?" I ask.
"Yeah, that's fine," she smiles.
I can faintly hear people outside talking because I left the front door open. When I creep closer to the door, I can separate the voices: Michael and Luke.
"Dude, shut the fuck up! You don't even know what happened!" Luke yells, but you can tell he's trying to be quiet.
"Yes I do! For the twentieth time! Everyone knows except Hope and I'm going to tell her!" Michael says.
"You tell her and it'll be worse for you than for me. She trusts you as a best friend, man. Just let her be happy," Luke says in a calm tone.
"You don't know what makes her happy, only I do," Michael says, oblivious to his love life that's nonexistent with me.
"Everything between Hope and I is so much more than you think! I know you fucking hate me, but you have to fucking believe me. You can ruin whatever we have going, but it's not going to help," Luke tells him, my heart flutters a little.
"You're only doing this because I asked you not to!" Michael says. He really told him not to? What, is he his father?
"No, that's not it. If you don't remember, she called me! You're fucking bro code is doing more harm for you than good. Just let her be happy," Luke says, his voice was so quiet that I barely heard. Although it wasn't that quiet.
"Why can't you respect it? I only called you that day because I thought you were a real mate, not some loser asshole," Michael says. My jaw hits the floor. It was him. Luke. He was on the phone with Michael that day. This whole time Luke's been doing this, knowing why, knowing about everything, but more than what I told him. I was so mad at Michael for this, yet Luke is just as guilty.
Luke's POV
"I never intended on betraying you or whatever the fuck you think, but you have to believe me. I'm not going to beg you, but you should. Quite frankly, I don't give a shit whether you like her or not," I tell him. I'm fucking annoyed that he's still doing this.
"You think just because you are so fucking awesome that you can do what you damn well please. I can't make Hope see the real you," he spits, "but if you hurt her, I swear," he leaves an empty, open threat.
"Okay Mike, okay. She's going to be out any second and if you don't want her upset you either need to act like my best friend or get the hell away from me," I tell him. Not even a second later, the door slams shut. What was that?
"Fuck off," he flips me off before leaving to his house. I shake my head, still in shock about how ballsy he is. Unbelievable, really.
I follow the noise that sounded from the front door. I knock, but she doesn't answer. I knock again. Still no answer. I ring the doorbell at least three times before her mom answers. At this point, I can only assume she heard the conversation, but I have no excuse for it. I didn't know I was going to fall for her the way I did, other wise, I would've said no.
"Where's, Hope?" I ask. Her mother's face is disappointed and now my suspicions are confirmed.
"She's in her room, rather upset. I think you should head on home. Isn't your mother wanting you?" she says. I don't think it'd be the best thing to push Hope's mother or herself considering I'm on thin water. I nod my head and turn on my heels. There's got to be a way to fix this fucked up mess that fucking Michael Clifford just caused. She's the only one I've ever even shown the tree house to.
The one I trust..
