June, 1977.

Viola Rivers and Ezekiel Figuero were meant to be. They were in love. It was a known fact. Anyone with a functional set of eyes could see that, those two were not being slick. Him especially. Ezekiel's affection for the girl lying on his bed had been blatantly obvious, so much so that even she was aware. It wasn't exactly a secret, as he had voiced his feelings for her before—he hadn't confessed outright, but the many poems about her as his muse were a telltale sign—and wasn't hiding it, but they never talked about it. It hadn't changed their friendship, as they had promised to always be supportive of each other. The two teenagers had been inseparable ever since they first laid eyes on each other in kindergarden, and Viola moved into the neighborhood, quickly forming a close bond along with everyone else.

But their friendship was unique. They shared everything, spent a lot of time together, and were very touchy-feely, which often led people to believe they were an item. It would always take them by surprise when they found out they weren't. For some reason, Ezekiel and Viola never became a couple and this left him frustrated, because he truly wanted to make her his. He just didn't know how to make it happen. And the idea of losing her terrified him.
