Chapter 13 – I’m back
Ashley sat in the dirt at his feet as she made another notch in the tree beside him.
It had been thirty days since she last saw him. He no longer had the rope around his wrist; she had gotten it off both of them when she first arrived.
How much time passed back home? Was it a week? Only a few days?
Here it would be about four weeks and he had said about two weeks went by in one day. Did that mean only two days had gone by for them?
Did they worry about her? Would Julian tell Scott what she had done? Did she want him to know?
She shook her head to clear her thoughts as she stood. Her hour was up and Toran would be looking for her.
As she got back to their camp she pasted on the smile she always wore around others. It had been strange when she first arrived there with Toran, they had still been under her ‘spell’ as Toran put it, and she had had to release them. She was thankful those days were over.
“Do you still miss him?” She frowned as large arms wrapped around her.
“He was a friend. I miss him dearly.” As she thought of how much time passed for him, she again wondered what they’d be doing. Would they give up on her? She had been gone for so long now and had no way of knowing how much time passed for them. For all she knew time could’ve been screwed up and the same amount had passed for both of them.
“If he were a friend he deserves a burial. It is not right to leave a body there.” Fear ran through her. If they buried his body would that kill him? Would that make so he couldn’t go to Verden ever again.
“No…” He spun her around and she saw his frown. “I mean, I don’t want to see his body go. That’s the last thing I have of him. He isn’t rotting. Please, just allow me to keep him where he is. There will be no danger for the people.” His frown deepened, but she reached up and lightly kissed his cheek, reassuring herself it was a sort of sisterly love, not anything more. She couldn’t have anything more with him. “Please?” She whispered in his ear.
He growled and his arms tightened around her. “You tease me.” She smiled before planting another kiss to his cheek. She needed to make sure Scott was safe. With a sigh, he pulled her back to look at her. “He can stay, but if he rots we will throw the body away and he will get no burial.” She nodded, accepting his terms.
She knew his body wouldn’t rot. It never seemed to no matter how long he was away. Neither of their bodies did.
What would happen to her body back at home? Would anyone find it and assume her dead? Without seeing her for a month would they think something happened to her?
“You are troubled.” She snapped back to reality and smiled at him.
She turned to Toran. She had had an entire month, and yet she hadn't been able to tell him what she planned.
Everyday Katha had asked her if she knew what she was going to do, but everyday Toran had arrived before she could answer. It was like he knew when they were talking, and what they were talking about. It was like he was prolonging the inevitable.
"Toran, I need to speak with you." He shook his head, not letting go of her. "Toran, come on."
"No, I know what you will say. Just stay. I don't want you to leave." He nuzzled his face into her neck.
"Toran," She pushed out of his arms and turned to look at him. "How do you know? I haven't said anything about leaving."
He frowned. "That day you talked to Katha. The look in your eyes. You were going to leave. She says you need to leave. I try keeping you, but every day you go farther. It’s his fault. You going to him."
