Chapter 11 – Tarkoitus

Ashley stood from her spot beside Scott's Verden body and released his hand. They had created a small space that would fit both of them, barely, and sat there together just before leaving Verden.

She had pushed her pain aside so they could get home, but with each passing moment it had grown until she could no longer handle it.

It had blown up larger than she had meant, but everything she said was true.

After living so long in the lies of others she couldn't do it anymore. She needed the ones around her to be truthful or not around her at all.

Shaking her head, she cleared it of the thoughts. She was no longer there. She no longer had to deal with them. She may never even see them again.

She sighed as she looked at the rope connecting her and Scott. At the time it didn't seem so bad, but if he ever tried going to Verden on a new moon he could simply follow the rope to her. She didn't want him to be able to find her.

Knowing the only way to be free of the rope was to have Toran take it off her; she set out to find him. She vaguely remembered the direction the village had been in and walked that way. She just hoped she’d be able to find him soon. She didn’t know anything about this place, or the creatures that lived in it.

She didn’t know how to defend herself were there something to attack her.

Ashley walked until the sun began to set and the rope tugged her backward. She tried pulling it further with her, but it wouldn’t let her go any farther. She had stretched the rope out to its maximum length.

A sob built up in her chest as she found a tree close enough to lean against.

Why couldn't anything go as planned? Why did she have to be so stupid and put the rope back on her arm?

Why did she-

"Forest not safe at night." She jumped at the voice, but it had her smiling.

"Where are you Toran? I want to see you."

A twig snapped off to her right, but his voice was on her left. "You must close your eyes Flower. I cannot allow me to fall in your spell again. You left for very long time."

She sighed and closed her eyes. For a moment everything was dark, but then, as if a switch had been flipped, she could see again. It was dark because the sun had finished setting, but she could still see. "I'm sorry for leaving you Toran. I was afraid. My people do not do the same as you. We do not do things just because we are connected to someone."

He stepped out of the trees right in front of her. "But you are my Tarkoitus."

"You've said that before, but I still don't know what it is." She stood and tried to step up to him, but the rope held her back.

"You are stuck." He gave her a smile and she felt her anger raise, but held it back. Now wasn't the time to get mad at him.

"Yes, I was looking for you. I wondered if you'd-" She stumbled forward as the rope seemed to loosen slightly, but it was still there. Toran caught her and held her close.

"I missed you Tarkoitus. Come back to my people with me." He looked down at her with pleading eyes.

"You have to explain what the Tarkoitus is and take your rope back, but I'll come."

He smiled and his eyes seemed to light up. He leaned forward, but she took a step back. His face fell immediately.

"I'm sorry Toran, but my people get to know each other before getting together. I want to know more about your people and your ways. I can't immediately jump into something. Please just give me some space."
