I ran as fast as I could. I felt glad that my wolf was one of the fastest of the pack because if he wasn’t so fast, they would have ripped me apart by now. The thought made me shudder.
They had lost me for now but it wouldn’t be long before Alpha Max’s men caught up to me. I only had one thought in mind. I had to warn Emelia. I wanted my sister to protect herself after I found a way out of here because if I got away Max would come for her.
What about her? My wolf sounded so low. I didn’t blame him. We had no part in Arianna’s murder but if only somebody would believe us.
She doesn’t believe us.
We have to talk to her.
I tried. You heard me. What else is there to do? We have to get away before they kill us.
My wolf didn’t reply but I could sense his distress. Perhaps all of this would be easier for him if Anna had stood by us but she hadn’t. The hateful look she had given me was too hard for us to handle. The moment she had pushed me away was probably the worst moment of my life.
The worst part of this entire situation was that Anna had refused to come with me.
“You ruined my brother’s life,” she had accused.
I stood outside my sister’s house, naked and cold. I had to get some clothes and a bit of cash in order to get out of Max’s territory and I hoped to god that Emelia would help me.
I banged at their front door with my fists. Only seconds later, Emelie opened the door.
“Cody, are you okay?” Emelia asked, her eyes wide with fear and worry.
“I’m as good as I can possibly be,” I said as he entered the house. I hoped it wasn’t the last time I would be here.
“They’re looking for you,” Emelia whispered as she followed me upstairs. I threw open the drawers and grabbed all the clothes I could and dumped them in a duffel bag.
“Cody, what are we going to do?” Emelia had tears in her eyes. I didn’t know what to say to her. How would my little sister fend for herself after I was gone? I was the only family she had.
I looked at her for a moment, not knowing what to say then I turned around quietly and pulled on my clothes.
“Cody?”
“I don’t know, Em,”
“Where will you go?”
“Out of Max’s territory and then… I don’t know,”
“I wanna come with you!” Emelia pleaded.
“Absolutely not!” I didn’t know where I was going and the last thing I wanted was to drag Emelia along. What if I couldn't survive? I didn’t want my sister to suffer because of me.
“Why?”
“Because it’s my problem and I’ll deal with it! I don’t want you to get involved, okay?”
“I can’t let you go alone!”
“Em, there’s nothing you can do to help me right now.” I told her. Her head hung low as she tried to hide the tears cascading down her cheeks. I took my sister in my arms and hugged her tightly.
“Please don’t worry about me,” I whispered, “just take care of yourself,”
Emelia nodded against my chest. I dropped a lingering kiss on her forehead and walked out the room, hoping that one day I would get to see my sister again.
