Chapter 102 –Consequences– Raine's POV

I couldn't explain it, but I was absolutely certain that I should change him, and no one was going to take that away from me. I replied softer, "No, you do not need to call Cage, because I will do it myself."

Talon's eyes widened. "Are you sure?"

I was also oddly confident that I would be successful. There was no doubt in my mind. I certainly wouldn't put Talon at risk otherwise. A part of me considered waiting for Cage, but I knew he would try to talk me out of it. It was highly frowned on to change a pet. Not illegal but highly frowned on. However, Talon was no longer a pet, and it was clear to me now that he wanted this. If anyone deserved to finally make his own choice, it was him. And I had every intention of making it happen.

I looked at him and confirmed, "Talon, you know all of the steps, yes?"

He nodded.

I knew them as well. It was a pretty straight forward process. I inclined my head toward his chest, taking a moment to carefully listen to his heart, to make sure I could hear it and calculate the tempo. He stood stock still. I was easily able to discern the pace, so felt confident.

I also took a moment to consider my thirst. It was absolutely imperative that I didn't lose control. I had fed twice since turning, and both times I had not had any misstep or even come close to losing control. Cage had made sure my thirst stayed fully satiated, so I wasn't even remotely thirsty now. It was actually an optimal time for me to change him.

We still had one problem.

We needed a human.

I couldn't very well go and fetch one of Echo's pets, and I had no intention of using someone without their full consent. That just left one person. I turned to Ivy. She was so shocked by the turn in the conversation, that she lost all of her pet training and blatantly stared at Talon and I with wide eyes. Her hands twisted and trembled in her lap.

Talon knelt down in front of her. He took her hands and said softly, "I know I am asking a lot of you and if you don't want to do this, I would completely understand." His voice was tight. It was easy to hear how much he wanted to go forward, but was really trying to give Ivy an opportunity to decline if that was what she wanted.

Tears ran down her cheeks, and she whimpered, "But what if you hate me afterward?"

His gaze softened as he cupped her face with both hands. His touch was impossibly gentle. He leaned up and pressed his lips to her forehead. "I could never hate you."

She closed her eyes and hiccupped softly. Finally, she reopened them and whispered, "Yes."

He visibly relaxed and kissed her on the side of the cheek. "Thank you."

She only nodded. Talon stood and looked at me expectantly. I felt it best if I followed Cage's steps exactly, so I motioned toward the bed. "Would you feel uncomfortable if we completed the transition in the same position that Cage did with me?"

"No...that's okay," he replied softly and climbed on the bed. I joined him and slid around his shoulders, so that he was leaning back against my chest. Due to his height, he had to shift lower in my lap for me to reach his neck, but I felt confident I could use my legs to restrain him if I needed to.

When we were settled, I asked, "Are you ready?"

His heartbeat increased. He simply nodded.

I didn't delay, sinking my fangs deep into his neck. His body jolted and he shuddered hard. His heart was racing in his chest, making it easy for me to hear.

But then the loud thudding noise seemed to lull my senses. And I felt a completely unexpected rush...I was intimately connected to him in a way that I never anticipated...I felt every last bit of his emotion, past and present. And I wasn't at all prepared for all of his pain and suffering to surge through my consciousness. I was stunned and overwhelmed.

It was so sharp.

It pierced my very soul.

Everything that woman had done to him.

Every last ounce of torture and suffering she had inflicted.

I felt it all.

My irises flooded with crimson, and I trembled with rage, so strong that I was entirely lost to it. In anger that I could no longer control,  my jaw reflexively clenched down harder on his neck.

He groaned in pain, but even his struggle didn't clear the fog in my head enough for me to realize I was hurting him. I was too consumed...too far gone...swept away by unbridled rage that I could not control.

I continued to drain the life out of him, no longer remembering my task at hand, only trying to satiate the thirst I had for revenge...against the one woman who had caused so much pain.

Moments went by.

The only sound in the room was me suckling against his neck.

"Mistress? Hasn't it been long enough?" Ivy whispered timidly, interrupting our frozen moment, her worry finally sufficient for her to question my actions.

I didn't reply. I couldn't. I heard her words, but they meant nothing to me. Talon groaned loudly and then lost consciousness, going completely limp in my arms.

Ivy jumped to her feet and stepped once toward the bed, before she stopped and rocked back on her heels. She called out louder, trying to catch my attention, "Mistress?!"

My ruby red eyes snapped to her and I growled in the back of my throat.

She gasped loudly as she took in my feral countenance, and cried out, "Mistress! have to stop now! You are going to kill him!!"

I just growled again, this time louder, a warning for her to stay away from me.

Tears streamed down her cheeks. "Please, not kill him!"

I heard her words, but the meaning of them didn't register. I was reacting on instinct, overpowered by hate, lost in my lust for vengeance.

Ivy's head spun as she looked around the room. Then she took off toward the table and snatched up Talon's cell phone. Her hands shook violently but she must have been successful in dialing because she screamed, "Master Cage...Please help us!"

Fury rolled through me. How dare she call him?! I wouldn't let her stop me, I had no intention of letting Cage either. My muscles coiled ready.

In the next instant, both Cage and Echo burst through the door.

I growled a loud warning. They had better stay away from me if they knew what was good for them. Ivy babbled, tears still rolling uncontrollably down her face, "She's trying to change him! But she won't stop!"

It took less than a blink for Cage's expression to go from utter shock to unbridled fury.

"Cage...his heart!!" Echo called out, his voice strained.

"Motherfucker!" Cage swore loudly and then disappeared. I felt a blinding pain in my jaw, stunning me for just a moment. He hissed urgently to Echo, "Get his body!"

Abruptly Talon was torn from my grip.

Cage released my jaw and roared, "What the fuck were you thinking?!"

As soon as I stopped drinking Talon's blood, I came back to my senses. Reality crushed me. I was horrified to see his limp body lying on the bed. Because I was certain of only one thing. His heart was silent.

Talon was dead.

And I had killed him.
