Chapter 4 (Part 2 of 2)
What the hell was she thinking pushing him like that? She had no business whatsoever talking to a client in the manner that she’d just spoken to Dirk Curry. Hell, she’d never spoken to anyone as crudely as she’d spoken to him.
So why did she have to start now?
Other than claiming a momentarily loss of her sanity, she really didn’t have a reason. There was something about him, she admitted. Something that made her want to be the one person to get up under his skin. She noticed it first at the wedding reception when he asked her to dance and she refused. The man didn’t take no for an answer, and she ended up dancing with him anyway.
And now it was happening again. Ever since she walked into the conference room and saw him standing there, she’d been frazzled. She never asked to be on his case, whatever it may be. But she didn’t have a choice and by the smug look on the bastards face he knew it.
The entire time she talked to her boss he stood in the background looking so cool and confident. It frustrated her so much that by the time they left the conference room all she wanted to do was wipe that superior smug look off his face.
But was that really enough reason to take a jab at his manhood?
Her professional side said, no. She should just suck it up and get the details she needed so she could do her job.
But the less than professional side of her wanted desperately to give him the finger and to tell him exactly where he could go and shove his precious case.
“Look,” she sighed, her common sense kicking in and the professional side winning out. “I admit that I shouldn’t have said what I did. It’s none of my business what how big or small you happen to be and I sincerely apologize for making,” she winced a little while she tried to find the right words, “less than appealing inferences. I’m not having the best of days and it seems as if my mouth is having a very bad case of verbal diarrhea. I’m really sorry about what I said and I can promise you that I won’t go there again. Ever.”
“Okay,” he said, pulling into the parking lot of the restaurant she suggested. Turning the key, he cut the ignition and glanced over at her, fighting to hold back a smile. She had surprised him yet again with her response. “I understand that everyone has bad days once in a while so apology accepted. On that note, I’ll apologize for asking you such an intimate question. I was out of line, but,” he said, as he held her gaze steady, “I will not promise that I won’t ask that question again once we get to know each better because to be honest with you, I like you. And because I like you, I really am looking forward to getting to know you better.”
Well, wasn’t that was just too bad. She knew all she needed to know about Dirk Curry and none of it was any good. But that’s neither here nor there. She really wasn’t up to arguing with the man. All she really wanted to do was get this lunch over with so she could do her job and be done with him once and for all.
“Fine. This is the place. I come here a lot because they have great service and great food.”
“It looks charming.” He unbuckled his seatbelt and opened his door. “Why don’t we go on in and then I can tell you why I came to your office in the first place, okay?”
“Sure,” she agreed, and before he could come around to her side of the SUV and open the door like a true gentleman, she hopped out and slammed it closed behind her.
