I watched Mia swim and play with the girls. She looked effortlessly beautiful. I loved that she didn't care that her hair was wet, or that the light makeup she had applied had long ago washed off. She was just having fun and the girls were loving the attention.
Megan had reluctantly called them out, more so Mia could have a break although she actually looked as disappointed as the girls and I couldn't help but smile. I met her by the side of the pool and handed her a towel as I placed a quick kiss against her wet lips.
"You are fucking beautiful Mia." The words slipped out before I knew it and she blushed and smiled, her small hand reaching up to cup my cheek.
"Thank you." She answered sincerely, my eyes were lost in hers as she brushed her lips against mine in a kiss that was barely there, but held so much promise.
When she came back down she was barefoot, wearing a black singlet and denim cut off shorts, her hair had been pulled back into a loose bun, a few tendrils still hanging loosely around her face.
I sucked in a breath as I watched her smile at the girls and come towards the table. She faltered as she looked my way, her face showing surprise before her eyes darkened with a need that matched mine.
The realisation hit me: I was gone.
That look was different. I don't know how or why, I just knew it was different.
Megan and I were in the kitchen, cleaning up from lunch and getting some snacks ready for when the others arrived.
"How did you meet? I mean, if you're from Melbourne and Jay obviously lives here, how did you meet?"
I had been anticipating this question and after discussing it with Jay earlier, I told her the truth, leaving out a few of the more intimate details.
She looked surprised, more at my honesty than what I had told her.
"Wow." She stood in thought for a while. "Can I ask you something?" She asked warily and I nodded. "Sure."
"What happens after?" Her words were quiet and she looked unsure of whether she should have asked when she saw my face.
I shrugged my shoulders. "I don't know."
"It's been a long time since he's looked at someone the way he looks at you." She confessed.
She cleared her throat. "I'm not saying it's love Mia, at least not yet, but I haven't seen him look at anyone that way since Tracy."
Her words sounded a bit harsh as she mentioned that name. I stayed silent, figuring she'd tell me what she wanted me to know. "Actually, he never looked at her quite the same." She added as she drew her bottom lip between her teeth as if thinking. "I won't go into details, it's not my story to tell, but I like that he's happy and I don't want to see him hurt again."
I nodded as if I understood when in reality I didn't understand anything.
"I don't plan on hurting him Megan, I really do care for him."
She accepted my answer without further questioning and I was grateful. Although she'd told me next to nothing, she gave me a lot to think about.
We both turned towards the door as Cam strode in, a carton on his shoulders and a shit eating grin across his face.
"Ladies, I'm here." I couldn't help but laugh at his easy going nature.
"Oh thank god, I was about to drown my sorrows with a bottle of vodka in a dark cupboard somewhere."
His loud laugh was instant, his blue eyes twinkling with amusement. "Just leave a trail of breadcrumbs sweetheart, I'll find you." He winked and Megan groaned.
"Forever the flirt Cam." She admonished in a playful way.
He kissed us both on the cheek before heading out back where the boys were now playing darts.
"Hey boys, let's get this party started."
The only thing funnier than Megan or Cam, was Megan and Cam together. They were hilarious and when they started ripping into Jay, I had to hold my sides because they hurt so much from laughing.
He took it in good humour, mostly, but when I could tell he'd had enough I reached down for his hand and placed them both on my thigh. He looked at me, a smile crossing his face as he moved them up higher, his thumb rubbing circles on my inner thigh.
More of Jays mates arrived and the music was turned up, the drinks were flowing and I was trying to remember names when I could barely remember my own. I guzzled a few glasses of water, trying to clear the fuzz that was threatening to take over my brain.
"Hey little lady." I smiled up at Cam who was grinning down at me. "Been overindulging?" He asked knowingly.
"A little, just trying to fight it off before it pulls me under." I admitted.
I felt a pair of strong arms around my waist and soft, full lips against my neck, Jays scent wafted around me.
"Hi babe." I whispered as I leant my head back on his shoulder.
"Hey, just thought I'd let you know that Megan and Rob are leaving."
"Thanks Jay, I'll come see them out with you."
Cam made his way back outside as Jay and I said our farewells to Rob, Megan and the girls.
"Can we come back and play with you soon Mia?"
"Of course, I'd like that." I answered as I gave each of them a cuddle, before Uncle Jay picked them both up and kissed them.
"Love you." I heard him whisper to each of them before handing them back to their parents.
"Can we catch up next time you're in town Mia?" Megan asked and I smiled.
"That would be great."
"I told you there was nothing to worry about." Jay said as we headed back inside.
"I know, you were right. I had a great time with them, especially Milly and Poppy. They're the cutest little things."
"And I had a great time watching you." He said huskily as he pulled me against him, my chest against his, my hands on his shoulders as his moved from my waist to my hips pulling me against his growing erection.
"Jayden?" A female voice interrupted us and Jay looked over my shoulder.
"Hey Sam, everything okay?"
"Um yeah, just wondering if you're coming back out?"
His eyes moved back to mine. "We'll be out in a minute."
Jay shrugged as he saw the question on my face. Last weekend had been just us, with a brief visit from Cam. Today had been spent with his family and friends and a big dose of reality.
I had met some of those who were a part of his life and heard about those that had been. My bubble had burst and I was beginning to feel vulnerable.
