The newbies

I smiled happily as I opened the door of the Woodchuck cabin.

Finally,  finally here.

This place was like my home away from home.

Then the door swung open and a tiny Asian girl walked in.

"Hey Tif," I smiled.

"Hey Gigi,"She flopped onto her bed.

"Mom again?"  I asked her.  I had never met Tif's mom,  but from Tif's stories...well...lets just say,  she was a very strict woman.

"Bobby failed his math test in October and I haven't seen him since."  Tif whined.

"Oh...well that sucks.  Would you like some baklava?"  I asked her,  holding out the tray I had.

"Ooh yes, tell Mama Alexopoulus I love it and thanks for making it for us every year."

Just then my bubbly co-counselor and best friend walked in.

We hugged and I passed the tray to her, smirking.

"Yes! I've been waiting for this for almost a full year!" She stuffed one into her mouth.

"Well I'm going to go visit Xander, tell me when the newbies get here, there's supposed to be two of them."

I was sitting on Xander's bunk, tuning his guitar while he played with his basketball, when some Indian kid marched in.

"Greetings bunk mate! Oh, I'm sorry, I did not know your girlfriend is here. I can give you too some privacy and I'll come back later."

"Ah, no...he's my ex boyfriend, and we're just friends now." I said awkwardly.

"Uh, hey that alligator thing ate your pet!" Xander said loudly, pointing at the lizard thing on a leash.

"I think that is his pet." I muttered.

The Indian boy nodded. "Yes. She is my pet."

We then found out the kid's name was Ravi.

Then Xander started telling his toenail story and I ran out of there, with a murmured excuse about meeting one of my friends. When I got back to the Woodchuck cabin where Lou and the new girls were talking about fashion covers.

"Hey!" I said, twisting my long chestnut hair into a messy bun on my head.

They all turned to me.

"Well, I'm Gianna Alexopoulus, your other cabin counselor and it is a pleasure to have you as Woodchuck girl."

"I'm Emma, your new CIT," the blonde girl said and then she pointed to the other girl. "And she's Zuri."

"If we run we can catch the limo." The younger girl muttered.

I narrowed my icy blue eyes. Wow. Rude!

Emma saw my expression and she shrugged apologetically. "I'm sorry. Zuri's just in a little bit of a mood."

Later, we were walking around and I smirked when Emma started fangirling over Xander.

Then I saw Hazel try to make a move on Xander.

"Better luck next time. Maybe next time you should corner him so he can't escape. " I called to a defeated Hazel.

"Yes! You're right! Thanks Gianna. You know best anyway, being Xander's ex." Hazel smiled and walked off.

"Why'd you do that?" Xander asked.  "I'm screwed now!" He looked terrified.

"Oops, my bad," I smiled sweetly.

He was about to retort when he saw we had an audience. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes as both Xander and Emma stared at each other for a full minute,  both obviously lovestruck.

"Hi, I'm Xander." He told Emma.

"I'm Emma."

"I'm nauseous." Hazel muttered.

"Listen cheekbones, Xander is mine." Hazel threatened Emma.

"No I'm not." Xander said.

"Yeah he's taken by his beloved toenail guitar pick." I commented.

"Freckles..." He sighed.

Hazel stormed off and Xander went back to his cabin, leaving me and Emma.

"Why does Xander call you Freckles?" She questioned.

"Because I have few freckles. He gave me the nickname after he found out I had them. An amazing discovery or something like that. I don't know why I only have like ten or something." I said simply.

"You do?"

"I'm tan so they're harder to see."

"I know. I'm so jealous of your tan. It's so light and natural and just...outdoorsy. I can see why Xander likes—liked you. You're so pretty, you've got these gorgeous blue eyes and silky chestnut hair, and you're tan, athletic, friendly, everything. How am I supposed to compete against that?!"

"Look, there's no competition. We're not dating anymore. He doesn't like me like that anymore. You have to stop obsessing over this." I tried to tell her.

"I know—I've always been like this. I'm not being shallow, I swear. I really, really like him Gianna."

"He just has bad timing. He likes you back though, more than he ever liked me." I told her. It was true, in my opinion. I saw how he looked at Emma and I remember how he used to look at me and it was so obvious he was more into Emma than he ever was with me.

Yes, admitting that to myself hurt. A lot. Even after a year. But it was true. I was so sure it was.

"Just...chill before you end up like Hazel."

"Not funny!"

Yet somehow we both ended up laughing.
