Now that you learned how to write sentences in present tense, we are going to learn how to write sentences in past tense.

Before we begin, bear in mind that there are two forms of past tense; preterite and imperfect. In this chapter, you are going to learn about preterite.

Just like present tense, there is a pattern for past tense as well!

Here are the patterns...

-> Conjugation of regular -ar verbs(past tense):

For example, let's use the verb hablar(to talk, to speak)

For example, let's use the verb hablar(to talk, to speak).

Yo hablé inglés. = I spoke English.

Tú hablaste inglés. = You spoke English.

Ella habló inglés. = She spoke English.

Nosotros hablamos inglés. = We spoke English.

Vosotros hablasteis inglés. = They spoke English.

Ellos hablaron inglés. = They spoke English.

For exmaple, let's use the verb comer(to eat).

Yo comí la pizza. = I ate the pizza.

Tú comiste la pizza. = You ate the pizza.

Usted comió la pizza. = He(formal) ate the pizza.

Nosotros comimos la pizza. = We ate the pizza.

Vosotros comisteis la pizza = They ate the pizza.

Ellas comieron la pizza. = The girls(they) ate the pizza.

-> Conjugation of regular -ir verbs(past tense):

The pattern is exactly same as regular -er conjugation.

For example, let's use the verb vivir(to live, to reside).

Yo viví en Corea. = I lived in Korea.

Tú viviste en Estados Unidos. = You lived in America.

Ella vivió en España. = She lived in Spain.

Nosotras vivimos en Africa. = We lived in Africa.

Vosotros vivisteis en Australia. = They lived in Australia.

Ustedes vivieron en Italy. = They(formal) lived in Italia.

As you can see, Spanish is an easy language to learn in my opinion. Once you memorise the pattern, you can conjugate most of the common verbs very easily. Also, some of the words are very similar to English which makes it easier. Here are some of Spanish Cognates) color is color, animal is animal, hospital is hospital, delicious is delicioso, and exact is exacto.
