Is it really you?" I asked her.
She nodded yes and began to tear with joy; she opened her arms waiting for me to respond.
I went running towards her arms and held her tight. Even though she 'died' when I was young I still remembered her.
"Mother?" Emily asked confused?
"Katie's a bit tired, so she's confused" nana lied.
I was about to explain to Emily when mom wiped her tears as well as mine. She hugged me once more and whispered, "Don't say anything yet, I'll explain later" letting go of me.
"Katie?" someone else asked. I took another look towards the back doors and found Luke.
"Luke, what are you doing here?" I asked confused.
"William left Emily and me here for a while until he tells you about...." he wasn't sure what to say.
"About my aunt, right?" I said.
He looked shocked and then looked towards Emily, "You said we weren't supposed to say anything!" he said angrily, Emily looked like she was about to cry but stood strong.
"I told her," nana said, "Why don't you guys help me get some groceries, that way we can make Katie's favorite dish," she said grabbing a hold of Luke's hand and pushing Emily out the front door.
"Ok, I'll make the best chicken parmesan ever," she told me and left out the door not waiting for nana.
"Emily, darling wait for us!" she somewhat ran out after her pulling Luke with her.
After we heard a car leave, mom and I sat down.
I had so many questions that I wasn't sure what to asked first.
"Why is my dad keeping them here?" I asked her not sure if she would know since she was 'dead'. I was also here to find out why she was here and now I know why.
"That's why I came here. After finding out my sister was gone and that Emily was the last one to see her I had to figure out what happened" she said quickly.
"What do you mean what happen?" I asked her.
"I heard them saw that my sister committed suicide but I want to know why. She was helping me get close to you girls and we were to see each other that day" she said. "It doesn't add up" she whispered that last part.
"How are you here?" I asked changing the subject.
"It's a long story," she signed caressing my cheek. "You've grown so much, I couldn't see much from afar but now" she smiled.
"I have time," I told her smiling back.
"When I found out that I was pregnant with Emily, I was excited. Everything was great until doctors found out something abnormal, so I faked my death with the help of an old friend," she said describing everything that she had to do to fake her death. "It was a great thing that your father wasn't here when I gave birth to Emily; it was much easier to fake it. I didn't want you guys to see me go through the things that I had to go through. I was in the hospital for most of the time and when I finally was let out, I searched for you guys. I couldn't be away from my family but I couldn't be near you guys otherwise, you would find out that I was alive. I called to hear your voices, I was always there when you guys were at the hospital and I tried being there when you needed it but I was so sick that I couldn't stop it," she sadly said.
"Stop what?" I asked she looked concerned about what she was thinking.
"Never mind that, but now that I'm all better I'm here to stay. The only thing stopping me is the fact that you all think I'm dead and, well your father remarrying for the third time," she said.
There was a long silence, I looked at my phone and couldn't believe we had been talking for a long time. Nana and the kids would be here at any moment yet I still had so many questions.
"But since you're alive, dad can't marry anyone else since you're still married," I thought how happy Gabby and Kassidy would be when I returned home with Emily and mom.
"No, I know you're thinking of telling them but it isn't time. They wouldn't understand" she said scared.
This was the opportunity for our family to be happy again but she didn't want to do anything. That's when it hit me, all this time she was alive, all the times that my sisters and I suffered because of her. Even if she was sick, I would prefer that then finding out that you lost someone you love.
"What, that they wouldn't understand that you left us!" I told her standing up. "Do you know what we have been through? What Gabby and Kassidy have suffered?" She reached out towards me but I pushed her away.
"I'm just here for my sister since it looks like you are fine. Let's just continue our lives just like now. You elsewhere while my sisters and I with dad," I told her. I was frustrated and I didn't want to continue seeing someone who lied to all of us for her own sake. Just then, Emily, Luke, and nana came back.
"Let's go, guys, we're heading back home," I said taking away the groceries and leaving them on the coffee table.
"It's too late now for all you guys to be outside, why don't you wait until tomorrow?" she said worriedly.
I signed; "Fine but we're leaving tomorrow," I told Emily and Luke.
"But I like it here," Emily said sadly.
"I don't," Luke said annoyed.
"We still have the separate hut out in the back right?" I asked nana.
"Yes but why are you asking?" she asked.
"Sorry nana but I can't be under the same roof as her," I said.
"No, no, no I'll leave. After all, this is your house, I am staying in a hotel room, either way, thanks, nana" mom said hugging her. "I'll see you tomorrow" she hugged Emily and Luke.
"If we're still here" I whispered.
"I hope you can forgive me for what I did and I understand that what I did wasn't right but I wanted to protect you guys from...." She stopped and said no more. She was about to hug me but I moved aside. She left after seeing that I wasn't going to respond.
"Luke, Emily, why don't you guys go to your rooms. Katie and I have to talk" she said, they obeyed and left.
"What's with your attitude? I didn't teach you like that, so who's changing you huh?" she asked completely mad at what I had done.
"You also didn't teach us to lie, you always said that it was better, to tell the truth yet you're on her side!" I told her.
"I know your mom lied but that doesn't mean you should act like that to her, she's also been through a lot. How would you feel if you had to leave the people you loved with all your heart for a long time?" she asked.
I didn't want to continue this so I also left out the back door. I needed some fresh air to process everything that just happened.
Who knew that not only would I find out the reason why Emily was here, but I also would find out that my mother was still alive.
