Chapter 1 – The Letters

Dear Ashley,

I see you standing there

Blending into the crowd

You don't like to stand out

Hiding behind the curtain

That's where I'll find you

Always behind the scenes

No one knows why

But you seem really shy

I think it's really cute

But others just laugh

I'll stay behind the lines

So I can always be with you

- Yours Truly

"Oh my gosh Kate, come look at this." Ashley reread the note before passing it to Kate, her best friend.

There was something about the note that seemed strange. Not only was the person who gave her the note a mystery, the truth of the words scared her.

Kate chuckled before giving the note back. "Looks like you have a secret admirer." She wiggled her eyebrows. "I wonder who it is." She looked around the school hallways, but no one was watching them.

"I don't know, but it’s kind of creepy. How would they even know so much about me? Am I that obvious with the way I act?"

Kate sighed. "I don't know but I don't really care either. This person obviously likes you. It can be a really good thing if you let it."

"Whatever Kate, just don't read into it." She put the note back in her locker before grabbing her books and heading to class. "You know I'm not interested in dating right now."

She sighed. "I know. I just hate to see you like this. Not every guy is like-"

"Don't say it Kate." Kate stopped walking, but she didn't care. Kate knew exactly why she didn't mention him.

Kate ran to catch up to her. "Hey Ashley, I'm sorry. You know I didn't mean anything by it."

She sighed and turned to face her. "I know Kate. I just don't want to think about it."

She nodded and they both continued to their class.

Ashley sighed as she took her seat, knowing that today was going to be a long day.

"All right class, listen up." The chatter died down as Mrs. Howard faced them. "We are going to do our presentations next week. I've been warning you that they were coming up and you should've picked your groups by now. You have to have three people in your group. Separate into your groups now. If you don't have your own group I'll give you one."

The room bustled with noise as everyone rushed to get into a group with their friends.

Ashley glanced at Kate, wondering what they were going to do. Kate had other friends, but Ashley didn't. She knew Kate would stay with her so she didn't get stuck in a group with two people she didn't know, but that meant she would have to deal with someone she most likely didn't like.

She glanced around, seeing that a few of Kate's friends were waving at her.

"Go be in a group with them. I'll be fine."

She looked at her a little uncertainly. "Are you sure? You know I don't-"

"Its fine, go." Her look of relief made her feel terrible. Kate had her own life to live and Ashley had been keeping her from it. She had been so selfish.
