The sound of Felix's rhythmic breathing was the only thing keeping Ryan from losing his mind, and the radio receiver held him captive as he and his team took a red eye to Toronto. He had heard most of the conversation between Felix and Dr. Florence, the lousy stoolie, and Ryan's instincts told him Felix was playing the patsy - that her prints had been planted on evidence to distract the feds from the real criminals. The fact that she had been undergoing hypnotherapy was a significant clue in the case, and while Ryan refused to believe she was responsible for two murders, if they could prove she had been drugged and put under the influence of hypnotic suggestion before the crimes were committed, she could definitely plea bargain.
They flew into Toronto's international airport so as not to raise suspicion at the island airport, meeting up with the Toronto police. Everyone piled into a civilian suburban, along with Fulton, the expert, and headed to the marine unit. Once they boarded the boat and were speeding across the harbor, Ryan found a spot away from the whining engine, keeping his ear pressed to the radio as he listened to a conversation between Felix and Donovan.
"Did you sleep well, Felix?" Donovan asked.
"I understand Dr. Florence paid you a visit this morning."
"How did that go?"
"I don't know. I was under hypnosis for most of it."
"Of course. He informed me that you refused the sedative."
"Yes. What good is a beautiful mind if it's under the influence of drugs?"
"Hmm. I see your point. Let me cut to the meat of the matter, Miss Taylor. I am going to set you and Andy up in an apartment here in Toronto. It will be your home for the foreseeable future. I'm sure you won't mind being away from your family in Chicago. From what I understand, you have lost touch with them."
After a moment of silence, Felix spoke. "Just to be clear, Donovan, Andy and I are not together anymore. So, my preference is not to live with him."
"Oh, that's too bad. It's hard to cultivate relationships these days. There are so many distractions to drive us apart. I'm afraid, however, that you and he will have to find a way to live amicably, as you will continue to work together in the capacity I hired you for. Is that understood?"
"Don't look so sad, Felix. You are a beautiful, young woman. I am sure you will find a man who will ignite your spark again. Perhaps, one of my assistants can fill the position."
"I would be glad to volunteer." Carlos's voice echoed through the radio, and Ryan clenched his jaw, imagining Carlos with cleat marks on his face. Felix offered no rebuttal, but Ryan suspected she was wearing a scowl.
"Well, this has been a pleasant breakfast, but I must excuse myself," said Donovan. "I have to make an engagement elsewhere before the end of the day. I try not miss appointments, especially when they involve my wife."
"I thought you were taking a special interest in me and Andy because we were important to the cause," Felix said. "Or are you merely sticking us in a new location and ignoring us again?" When Donovan didn't answer, she continued. "I heard you were throwing a party on that nice speedboat parked next to the dock."
This time Donovan responded with a chuckle. "I don't know how that rumor got circulated, but I assure you, I did not start it. If you have any more questions for me, Miss Taylor, one of my associates will get you in touch with me."
Before the receiver could spit out another word, Ryan was standing next to Fulton. "Donovan is on the move."
