"Laelyn! Laelyn, are you alright?" I felt a hand shaking my shoulder. I struggled to open my eyes. When they finally fluttered open, I saw Beckham- I had passed out again, and he had caught me. I sat up quickly, and instantly became dizzy. Beckham supported me so I wouldn't fall again. I looked around, and realized that no one else had noticed me slip into unconsciousness.
"That wasn't supposed to happen..." He whispered, "Oh, God, I'm so sorry."
I looked up at him, confused. "It wasn't your fault."
"Yes, it-" He stopped short, and shook his head, cursing under his breath. "No, I supposed it couldn't have been." Why was he acting like this?
"Thank you, though." I said, gratefully. "For not letting me fall."
He looked back down at the ground. "Welcome." He muttered. He seemed to be looking down in shame.
"You know, it really wasn't your fault, Beck." I said again. He laughed emotionlessly.
"I wish I could believe that."
"How could you not? It couldn't have been your fault- you didn't even touch me." I reasoned. "Besides, I've been doing that a lot lately."
"Passing out?" He asked fearfully.
"No, daydreaming. I think... they come out of nowhere. Maybe that's why I lose consciousness, the daydreams." I tried to think of a scientific way to explain it.
"Yeah, maybe..." He didn't believe me, and it was obvious.
"Well, what do you think it is, then?"
"I don't know," He laughed. "Maybe it just doesn't have an explanation."
"Yes, it does," I argued, "Everything has a scientific explanation, or else we would call it magic." I laughed. Again with the magic, I thought to myself, I wish it actually existed. It would be much easier to explain away the wonders of the world.
"Well, maybe there is magic." He remarked, then seemed to immediately regret it.
"I wish." I said back. "I think if there were magic, someone would have found out already."
"Maybe..." He trailed off as Mr. Sark walked in front of the bleachers. I looked over at Link, but he was caught up in a conversation with Chanson. I guessed he still hadn't gotten to ask Alyrica.
"Alright everyone, warm up!" Mr. Sark yelled, and we all got up off the bleachers and began our stretches. Mr. Sark walked back into his office, and Link headed over towards Alyrica. You've got this, Link, I silently told him. Take the chance! I was close by, and I could hear every word. I eavesdropped while I stretched.
"Hey, Lyric!" He called. Alyrica jogged the rest of the way to meet him.
"Oh, right! What did you need?" She asked happily.
"Well, I was just thinking, that we've been friends for awhile... Like four years... And it's your birthday today, oh, yeah, happy birthday by the way! But anyways... umm..." He rambled, running his hand through his hair nervously. "I was just wondering if-"
"Okay!" Mr. Sark interjected. "Pair up and take two laps for captains!" Link sighed.
"I'll just... get back to you later." He said, as Chanson ran over to pair up with him. Alyrica walked over to Corrine and got ready to run- they always paired up in gym as well. My partner changed almost daily, however.
"Laelyn!" Beckham tapped me on the shoulder, and I spun around, startled. I had been staring at Alyrica and Link the entire time. "Do you want to run together again?"
