Just an Ordinary Day at School

Start from the beginning

"That's great!" I said, genuinely happy for her. I'd been worried that her friendship with me would cause her to become a social pariah but thankfully she was still as popular as ever. I felt really special that someone as good as her had decided to be my friend, and spent more time with me than anyone else.

"I know!" Laura continued, then she looked at my bag that I was sifting through, and frowned. "You don't usually bring that bag to school."

"Er no I just thought I'd use a different one today." I lied.

"Why's it stuffed with clothes?" she saw through my deceit easily. "Oh gosh Dest! What's happened?"

I hesitated, not wanting her to worry about me,but I knew that she'd find out eventually. Sighing, I decided to tell her.

"Um, last night I went home to cook dinner and stuff." I began, not knowing how to phrase it.

"And?" Laura pressed me. She looked scared of what I could be about to say.

Oh shoot.

"Um, well.... I.. My parents were.... were out drinking and...." My voice was thick with tears. "And when they drove home...... they..... they crashed." This was the first time I'd said it out loud and I began to break down, sobs shaking my body again.

"Oh Destiny!" Laura's voice cracked and I saw tears in her eyes. "Oh that's... That's just..... I can't..." She pulled me into a big hug and I sobbed into her shoulder as she consoled me.

"I'm so sorry Destiny." she said, and I knew she genuinely was.

Eventually I stopped crying and we pulled out of the hug.

"So who are you staying with?" she asked gently.

I wiped my face with my arm. "No one." I told her, and a sense of hopelessness settled on me again as I thought about my lack of a home or family. What was I going to do?

"What?! Why not?" Laura looked positively alarmed at my response. "I thought the council is supposed to find you a foster parent or something."

"I thought so too." I said glumy. "But as I was told last night, that's my problem not theirs."

"That's not fair! It's not like you can just knock on people's doors and ask them to adopt you!" Laura was outraged.

I had just opened my mouth to reply just as the bell rang for the end of recess. Looking up at the sky I stood and got ready for my next class, which I would have with Laura.

"We'll talk about this later." I said quickly and we headed to food tech.

Ten minutes later, now in class, we took our spot at our work bay and started our prac. Today we were cooking food, incredibly delicious food to be exact. Okay it was just raisin cookies, but with my current homeless status any food was welcome. As Laura and I measured and mixed ingredients, we chatted about trifle things, not wanting to talk about my problems for our whole class to hear. I could tell Laura was worried though.

We mixed the cookies, we cooked the cookies, we ate the cookies, and then the bell rang and we left class. Pulling the straps of my bag over my shoulder I headed towards my next class with Laura following behind me, even though her classroom for this was in the other direction.

"Destiny....." she began.

"Laura, don't start." I cut her off before she could say anything more. "I know you're worried about me and that you want to help me in any way possible to mankind, but at the moment I'm fine. Just go to your next class and don't worry about me."

"Dest, honestly I can't not worry about you." Laura replied, not being deterred.

We stared at each other for a long moment and drew her into a hug. "Thanks for being a caring friend Laura." I told her as I pulled back. "Now go to class and sit next to Shaun."

"It's not English." she said, immediately distracted.

"Oh well, sit next to him anyway." I shrugged my shoulders. Laura laughed and stepped back, turning in the direction of her next class (probably).

"Ok I'll go to class, but I'll see you at lunch, okay?" she demanded of me.

"Of course." I grinned at her.

"And you're coming home with me after school, no complaints." she told me, and left before I could give an answer.

I was left standing there with my mouth open in protest. It's not that I had a problem with going home with Laura, it's that her parents would be there (they hated me), and something I was not up for, this afternoon, was facing Laura's parents.
