What it is: Val's book

Aleta Valentine Burns Deitch - 1921-2011

This is a book of my mother's poems and prose pieces, most written in the 1960's and '70's. I remember reading some of it back then, but I didn't appreciate it the way I do now.

Better late than never.

As she approached the end of her life - with a grace that set an example for us all - she asked me if I would be her "literary executor". Only one of her poems was published during her lifetime: "Searching for Doves". So I would inherit several notebooks full of her unique handwriting.

I said "yes".

My mom was my best friend. That's geeky, I know - deal with it. We had a lot of fun together. One thing we shared was a love of books and writing.

I started posting her stuff on Wattpad last year, and I was amused and mildly alarmed when they became more popular than my own!

But it inspired me. Thanks, mom.

We also shared a love of art. I went to an exhibit yesterday that she would have loved - American glass artist Dale Chihuly - and since she's not here to share it with me now, I'm going to share it with her, as illustrations to her poems.

Forgive the mess, we're renovating. I'm also going to be adding some of my own memories - you can tell which ones are mine, they'll be dated 2016.
