Feather After // Chapter 22 // The senior year

Aria's POV

I walked into the dining hall where my parents where sitting with a family which I assumed where soon to be my in laws, on the same empty oak table which now looked over crowded.

"Oh, look Aria is here," My mother announced when she saw me approaching her. Suddenly all eye were on me and I didn't like the attention. I wanted to be invisible but I couldn't do it. I tried to smile while hoping that the pain I felt inside me could just stay hidden. It was a big burden for me.

My mum smiled and got up from her chair and walked towards me. She looked as if she had won a million dollar. She caught my hand and started pulling me towards the table. I looked at everyone and I didn't find Nanna anywhere. I wanted to ask mother and father where she was but I didn't want to create a scene so I let it be.

My mom tried to pull a chair for me, but as I was taught I told her that I could do that for myself. I was an independent person. Even if I was not, the last few hours had taught me to be independent so that situations like these could be avoided in the future.

For instance, if I had the money of my own, I could have just left the house but on the other side, I was the only progeny my parents had. I know it was their mistake but I couldn't leave them even if I had money.

Once I was seated I smiled at the strangers in front of me. Father saw that everything and everyone was alright so he cleared his throat to get all the attention of the six people sitting on the large beautiful oak table. It was the very first time that I had looked at the things around me. The table had not table mat but was there was a vase at the center of the table filled with roses which I assumed that the guest brought.

The lighting of the whole room was dimmed and the wall lamps were on which gave the whole room a strange glow. It looked very beautiful. The table was empty and now my hands were on the table. It was very relaxing. In any other situation, I would have stretched my legs and would have been asleep by now, right on the dining table.

"Aria, this is my new business partner, Christopher Absalon," he said and smiled at him very proudly. I looked at him and gave him a small smile. He gladly returned the smile and I looked down. It doesn't take time for things to go awkwardly with me so I usually avoided situations like those. I looked at my dad and getting the hint he continued, "this is his wife Alexia Absalon and their son, Zechariah Absalon."

My eyes followed the introduction. My eyes stuck when I looked at Zechariah. He as a mix of his parents and he looked absolutely gorgeous with his golden hair with a hint of light red tossed back, his face looked well sculptured and his green eyes made situation look even more dangerous.

If it wasn't for the situation I was stuck in, I would definitely define him as hot. Then I soon noticed something, Mr. Abasalon was white and his wife had flawless dark skin, so which meant that Zechariah was a mix, a hybrid if you say in terms of biology.

He didn't have a light skin color it wasn't even dark skin color. It was a mixture of both and anyone could describe his skin color as perfect tan like that I-am-a-California-surfer-tan.

When I looked at him, I saw him looking at me with a raised eyebrow. Everyone had the same reaction bro. No big deal. I suddenly felt better. It was maybe because I was looking at the things from a different perspective or it was because I had realized that there was no point in being sad, it was not doing me any good.

"Aria you're still in high school, right?" Mrs. Abasalon asked me.

"Yes, ma'am," I nodded and looked at her.

I knew she was impressed. "No need of being so formal Aria, we're re going to be family very soon," she smiled at me. I wish I could have smiled back but I couldn't. Even if I forced myself to, I couldn't. I looked at Zachariah he was looking at me as if he was trying to read my expression. He didn't say anything though maybe he was caught in this like I was.

"So Aria, Zechariah is 18 years old and he is homeschooled, he will be joining you for senior year in school. He plays football and wants to peruse his career as an athlete." My mother informed me, trying her best to make the best impression she could possibly make of Zechariah on me.

I looked at her and I gave the best smile I could. "Zechariah this is Aria, she studies at Maple high and wants a career in fashion designing. Her favorite subject is geography," I was beyond shocked. What was my mother saying? I didn't have geography as a subject! I hate geography. And I nowhere in my life ever wanted to become a fashion designer. It was not even a career option for me.

Either she was saying this because she didn't know what I wanted to do or either it was because she didn't know that I wanted to peruse my career as an English major or as a social worker.

I smiled because that was the only thing I knew I could do then. Saying what I wanted to was not an option because I didn't want to cause trouble. I knew there were many more things they had wanted to tell me but they were taking it slow because they didn't want to repeat what had happened before.

There was an uncomfortable silence in the room. Everyone looked at me and Zachariah and we looked at everyone. He seemed to be a nice guy. But who knew what lay behind the cover.

"We're all so excited about the wedding!" His mother laughed and elbowed him. Upon receiving the elbow hit and glare from his mother Zachariah smiled a little just like me. He didn't like it and I didn't like it as well

.

"You guys will go on a date tomorrow. Isn't that great?"

"Till when will we be engaged?" I asked when I found my voice.

"Oh, you'll be married to Zachariah before the starting of the senior year."
