Lament for the Abandoned

I was looking up pictures of cats and I ended up looking at some posts about abandonment. I was inspired to write this poem, so I would appreciate if you'd take the time to read it.

Staring down this empty road, watch your shadow disappear
You left me here on my own, my cries which you were deaf to hear

What changed within me to make your passion quickly fade?
What changed within your heart that loving me was forbade?

Another mouth to feed, perhaps, that is what you were told
Or maybe it is because my body has grown to be too old

And though the days they pass me by, the roadside I won't leave
Steady heart and hope bestowed, I will not need to grieve

Cars drive by and trucks alike, but I still do not see your face
My fur is scuffed and matted, but I still take this disgrace

My stomach growls with hunger, I know not what to do
But down this lonely road I watch, eternal loyalty to you

Hoping you'll return someday to give me love once more
And soothe the ache within my soul you only can restore

Deep within my heart I feel it, my fear is plain to see
Is it somehow possible that you've abandoned me?

That cannot be, and so I wait, clinging to desperate truth
Though you left me here alone, still I love you too
