Chapter NineJewel felt nauseous. It was the same feeling she had whenever she was nervous. Unless she really ate something bad. She remembered feeling this way when she was in fifth grade. It was the time her mother was called to the principal's office. She had knocked one of her classmates down and sent the others with wounds to the clinic. It was a moment in her rebellious years. The time when she didn't understand why her mother raised her single-handedly or why she never met her father and relatives.
Her mother's worried face flashed in her mind. She didn't get any scolding after the incident. Just a heart-to-heart talk with her mother. Remembering how her mother cried once they got home, sent her into panic and resolution never to do it again.
"Breath milaya." Alexei's voice soothed. He clasped her hand and grinned.
"Have you come back to me, moy angel?" He caressed the frown that formed in her face. "You had gone silent for a long time, I was worried you passed out on me."
She shook her head. "Sorry, I am just anxious waiting for the other shoe to drop."
"Don't be." He reassured her and raised her hand to his lips. "Believe me, they are one of the most forgiving and understanding people I know. They will not judge you for you or your mother's actions."
She shrugged her shoulders and sighed. "I just hope so." She looked into his deep grey eyes and smiled. "Or else, I might have to result to eloping with you. That is unless you have changed your mind?"
Alexei took notice in the mischief in her eyes. He pressed his nose closer to hers. The act was more intimate than the kisses they shared. "Don't tempt me, moy milaya. I might as well kidnap you against your will just to ensure that you won't runaway."
"You really know how to swoon a lady, darling." She took another deep breath. This time, it was of relief. She kissed his cheek. "Thank you. I feel a lot more relaxed. I don't think I will ever get through this without you."
He placed a kiss on her forehead and hugged her close. "Don't worry milaya, I won't ever leave your side." His eyes shone with such deep devotion. She wanted to cry with happiness. How did she ever get so lucky?
She hummed her thanks and laid her head on his shoulder. "Do you think they'll believe my story?"
"I doubt that. I saw your picture with your mother in your wallet. Her face is an exact copy of Maxim's wife. They could be compared as sisters if they were of the same age."
"I hope you meant that in a good way, my dear boy. Or else, I would be very disappointed." A cheerful and warm voice interrupted them.
Jewel whirled her head towards the owner. She stifled a gasp as she came face to face with her grandmother. True with his words, the woman did in fact was the exact replica of her very own mother. Although, they had different set of eyes.
She always did wonder whom she got her unique set of blue eyes. Now, she understood that she got them from her grandmother.
"Of course, I meant it well Tetya Anzhela." Alexei stood up and kissed the woman's cheeks. "After all, you looked younger than any other woman of your age."
