"If you stay, stay forever. If you go, do it today. If you change, change for the better. And if you talk, make sure you mean what you say.

Nova Marie Hart

We had just moved in to our new home a few weeks ago. It wasn't too small, and it wasn't too big. It was the perfect size for our three-person family that consisted of my mom, dad, and I. There used to be five of us, but my two older twin brothers, Kai and Kaiden, ran off as soon as they were handed their diplomas. I haven't heard from them since, and that was over a year ago.

"Nova!" I heard my mom yell from downstairs.

"Yes?"

Of course her response never came so I dramatically threw my fluffy blanket on the floor and got out of my warm bed. Quickly pulling out the wedgie from my royal blue shorts, I jogged down the stairs skipping a few at a time.

Walking into the kitchen where my mom resided, I admired her milk chocolate skin glistening under the gold-colored chandelier. At 46, my mother was still a sight to see. I guess the saying was true, black didn't crack.Throwing a smile on my face, I spoke. "Yes?"

"You need to start getting ready for your father's banquet, the car will be here in an hour." she said while her eyes were occupied with tying up her black strappy heels.

I started to prepare myself for a boring night filled with speeches as I walked upstairs to start my shower. My father worked for a company called Grant Industries. They were under new management, so they relocated my family and I to another one of their corporations here in Jameson City. This city was way too big for my liking, but it was different and that was what I needed.

After getting out of the shower and oiling my body, I picked up the outfit I decided to wear for tonight. Slipping on my knee-length black dress, I applauded my figure in my white vanity mirror. My dress fit me like a glove, making my body look like an illusion. Standing at 5'5, with my glowing chocolate skin and shoulder length hair, I stared back at myself. I didn't have much to work with, but it was working for me.

I grabbed my clutch, placing my necessities in it. Snatching one of my watches from the desk and clasping it around my wrist, I walked downstairs and straight out the door.

My family and I were seated at our reserved table. Looking around, there were a lot of people my age and younger. They shared the same exact facial expression I was sure I had. Boredom. That was until they began getting up a few at a time and exiting into the hallway where the bathrooms were. I knew they all weren't using the bathroom, but it wasn't my business so I didn't think too much about it.

"Mr. Hart, I'd like to introduce you to my son. This is Quincy." I turned around only to be faced with Mr. Grant and a light-skinned guy who was smiling at me, showcasing his bottom gold grill. Looking at the way Quincy dressed, you wouldn't be able to tell that his father owned a multi-million dollar company. He was wearing black suit pants, and a baby blue dress shirt that was rolled up to his elbows, showing a few tattoos. I didn't mind though, it wasn't the norm, but it was especially pleasant to see a black family in control for once.
