Definition

§  Each individual has unique characteristics, but certain needs are common to all people.

§  A need is something that is desirable, useful or necessary. Human needs are physiologic and psychological conditions that an individual must meet to achieve a state of health or well-being.


Physiologic

v  Nutrition

v  Body temperature

v  Elimination

v  Rest and sleep

v  Sex


Safety and Security 

v  Physical safety

v  Psychological safety

v  The need for shelter and freedom from harm and danger


Love and belonging 

v  The need to love and be loved

v  The need to care and to be cared for.

v  The need for affection: to associate or to belong

v  The need to establish fruitful and meaningful relationships with people, institution, or organization


Self-Esteem Needs 

v  Self-worth

v  Self-identity

v  Self-respect

v  Body image


Self-Actualization Needs 

v  The need to learn, create and understand or comprehend

v  The need for harmonious relationships

v  The need for beauty or aesthetics

v  The need for spiritual fulfillment


Characteristics of Basic Human Needs 

v  Needs are universal.

v  Needs may be met in different ways

v  Needs may be stimulated by external and internal factor

v  Priorities may be deferred

v  Needs are interrelated


Maslow’s Characteristics of a Self-Actualized Person 

v  Is realistic, sees life clearly and is objective about his or her observations

v  Judges people correctly

v  Has superior perception, is more decisive

v  Has a clear notion of right or wrong

v  Is usually accurate in predicting future events

v  Understands art, music, politics and philosophy

v  Possesses humility, listens to others carefully

v  Is dedicated to some work, task, duty or vocation

v  Is highly creative, flexible, spontaneous, courageous, and willing to make mistakes

v  Is open to new ideas

v  Is self-confident and has self-respect

v  Has low degree of self-conflict; personality is integrated

v  Respect self, does not need fame, and possesses a feeling of self-control

v  Is highly independent, desires privacy

v  Can appear remote or detached

v  Is friendly, loving and governed more by inner directives than by society

v  Can make decisions contrary to popular opinion

v  Is problem centered rather than self-centered
