Chapter 59

“So, take these letters home, get them signed, pay your fees and bring those back for next weekend” Matt announced as he walked up and down the line of class, handing out the letters for the trip to Washington D.C.

English, History and Art were all going on a trip to D.C for something or other – I hadn’t really been paying attention as Matt announced it to us all. I was distracted.

It was the weekend that Kim was due to give birth – as Matt had previously specified – and so I wanted to go to get as far away from them as was possible.

“Mr Sanders?” one of the girls from the back of class shouted as she raised her hand in the air. “Will you be chaperoning?”

He nodded slowly, well aware that I was sitting just in front of him. “I am.”

She and her friends all turned to each other and started giggling, which was as annoying as hell.

I knew that I couldn’t show signs of being jealous, for none of them knew. But what really pissed me off was that they actually believed that they had a chance with him.

Every now and then, he would glance at me and try to make eye contact with me – but I tried to avoid him at all costs. I didn’t want anything in the slightest to compromise us. I didn’t want to end up like poor Vic.

“Okay” Matt added. “Open your texts. Charlotte. Read now please.”

I opened the Stand and began to read aloud on the correct page. Everyone in the class knew how much he picked on me for everything – and although they didn’t know why.

It pissed me off, it was almost as though he liked to tease the hell out of me, and it didn’t help that I felt completely sick that day.

Well, at least it was the last lesson of the day and I could just go home. I didn’t bother turning up to my detentions anymore, and Matt didn’t report me for not doing so.

I was fully aware of him watching me as I read too, and it completely put me off up to the point where I would stop and stutter, not being able to get the words out properly.

Eventually, he sat back in his desk and stopped me, droning on about something. I ended up switching off for the rest of the lesson and putting my head face down on the desk.

“Charlotte?” Matt spoke up as I was about to exit the classroom and go home. “Detention. Are we forgetting that?”

Because of the fact that there were still people in the lesson, I couldn’t completely argue with him, and deliver the reasons why I shouldn’t have had to stay, so I walked to the front of the room with a harsh glare on my face.

“What?” I snapped. “I thought you said-”

“I know what I said. But I would rather like to see you for a little while before you go home” he told me. “Take a seat.”

I sat down on the desk closest to him and stared at him blankly, waiting for him to say something.

“So are you going to go to D.C?” he asked hopefully. “I’d rather like it if you did.”

“But, Matt” I frowned, thinking. “Don’t you think it would be more of a compromise if we both did go? I don’t want to do anything that would get us in trouble.”

“We won’t. Unless we like make out in plain sight then nobody will ever find out. We just have to be careful. That’s all.”

“I’d rather that we didn’t have that temptation so that we don’t have to deal with anything so that we won’t get caught. It’s the only way we can know for sure that we’ll be okay.”
