Chapter 5

I woke in the early hours of the morning to use the toilet. I had come on my period and leaked on the bed. I rushed out to the loo and half way there remembered I was pregnant. I put my hand in my knickers and there is was bright red blood. My world crashed around me. My scream filled the air as I stared at the blood and rushed back to my room to phone Sharon.

"Hellooo," she replied groggily.

"Sharon, I am bleeding!" I sobbed.

"What?" I heard her trying to take it all in as she had obviously been woke up.

"I'm bleeding. I think I've lost the baby," I sobbed.

"Wake up... Jase... Wake up! Stay there Annie, I am coming!" she said hanging up.

She rushed over as I sat waiting. The hospital told me not to use the toilet or clean myself as they needed to see the extent of the bleeding.

Silent tears fell all the way to the hospital and throughout my assessment. I was going to have a scan to see if the baby was still alive. The words 'if the baby is still alive' pulled my heart down so deep I felt numb and heartbroken all at the same time. It was the weirdest, coldest feeling of dread I had ever felt.

Sharon went to get a coffee and tell my mum I was in hospital when Dean appeared in the doorway.

"Go away," I said turning my head away.

"I came to see how you are?" he said sounding concerned.

"I'm fine. You can go," I sniffled.

"And the baby?"

With those words I broke my heart crying, "Please just go away," I sobbed.

"I have a right to know."

"Like you give a shit!"

"Of course I do. It's my baby too."

"When have you shown the slightest bit of interest in this baby or its welfare?"

"Now for one," he snapped.

"Great the one time I don't want you here and you turn up. Where is your baby murdering mother? In the waiting room convincing others to kill their kids?" I snapped back.

"I don't know what you are on about? My mother is nothing to do with this?"

"That's right she is 'nothing' to do with this, so you keep her away from me. If she comes near me again I am calling the police and getting an injunction out against her."

He looked confused.

"Obviously she neglected to tell you she has been to my apartment a few times, once to drop off the bill for the car repairs but I closed the door in her face so she went and gave the bill to Sharon. Yesterday she turned up and offered to do me a favour. Do you know what that was?" I sniped as Sharon walked back in to my room.

"I'm not a mind reader Annie and don't know my mothers every move, you will have to fill me in. I've been away with work," he seemed reluctant to hear it.

"Can't you guess? I'm sure I'm not the only one of your 'notches' she stalks and books abortion appointments for with her 'friend at the clinic' who will 'tell her if I don't turn up' to kill our baby."

He visibly paled and shook his head in disbelief.

"You think I am lying about something as serious as this? And don't even think of making excuses for her. If anyone else had told me to kill our baby, booked me a termination and left me some money for my 'trouble', what would you do?"

"I... it doesn't make sense, she seemed to have come to terms with the baby."

"Has she fuck! Give him my keys to my apartment," I said to Sharon. "On the side of the bath is an envelope she left there yesterday when I was throwing up. I thought I was letting Sharon in, not her. She said it was a 'cure' for my morning sickness and told me she booked at appointment for 10:00 today. I'm sure she'll be ecstatic if the baby is gone already."
