“Honey, it’s just for a few weeks while your dad fixes his room. Please, just put up with it. For me, okay?”
I looked at my mother glaring daggers at her, “Mom, it’s not fair! Why can’t he stay in the living room? Why the fuck does he have to stay in my room?!”
Her sea green eyes darkened as she placed her hands on her hips. “Don’t you use that language with me, Andy. I will not allow it, not in my house.” Her look softened as she reached to caress my cheek, “Please, Andy, just for a few weeks. Plus, it was his idea. He thought that you two could get along if he shared your room.”
“Just because he’s older doesn’t give him the right to decide! I’m eighteen and I should have a say in this,” childish, I know but I wasn’t going to put my foot down. I walked away from my mother and up to my room. Slamming the door shut, I plopped on my bed head first and screamed into my pillow.
I could hear my mother talking outside my door; assuring my dad that I was just having a small tantrum. They both laughed it off and continued to my brother’s room.
I groaned and grabbed my phone from the charger. I needed to get out of here.
“Hello?” My best friend answered with a groggy voice.
“Dude, were you asleep? Sheesh, it’s midday, you lazy ass.”
Keith, my best friend, groaned and sighed, “So? There aren’t any rules against taking a nap, are they?”
Idiot, “Hey, can I come over?” I didn’t hear Keith’s answer due to my mom opening the door and peeking inside.
“Are you done with your childish acts, Andy?” I rolled my eyes. “We’ll be back in a little bit. Have to get ready for tonight’s party. I left roast beef in the oven, just heat it up and eat. Kain should be back around three.” She smiled at me and closed the door.
I went back to my call, “Sorry, mom was talking to me. So, can I come over?”
“Get your lazy ass over here,” Keith chuckled.
“I’m lazy?! The pot shouldn’t call the kettle black, dumbass.” I hanged up and stretched in my bed.
Keith and I had been friends since elementary. He was my best friend, my confident, my brother.
I groaned at the word ‘brother’. Sometimes I wished that he was my real brother instead of the poor-excuse-of-a-brother I had.
Kain was a real pain in the ass. He was always bullying me and making fun of me. He never let me forget that he was the older brother and treated me like a damn kid. Kain is twenty-one and I’m eighteen, but he never forgot about it.
I remember when he used to be cool. He would come home from school and we would play video-games practically all day. Kain would help me with my homework and with anything I needed help with. At some point he had become my best friend, and then things changed. When I turned sixteen he changed completely.
That’s the year that I came out to my family. Mom and dad nodded as they processed everything, and finally just accepted me and said they loved me nonetheless. My little sister, Trish, was two years old then so she really didn’t have much to say but poke my cheek and giggle. Kain, on the other hand, was still for a while. He seemed to be lost in thought, and then he just smirked and said it was cool. I believed him, but that was my mistake.
That’s when the annoying and humiliating teasing started. He would walk around the house making fun of me. He would pick on me for anything. When he finished high school, I thought he was going to move out. But instead he got a job and started paying my dad rent, so now he lives with us.
