Chapter 14
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I literally bolted up the stair as soon as we walked through the front door, leaving Everett somewhere behind. I figured he was going to follow me, but I heard him start talking to his mother about something, as much as I wanted to eavesdrop on whatever they were saying, I wanted to see Natalie a hell of a lot more.
Making my way back to our hallway, I knocked softly on my moms door while opening it slowly. My mom smiled when she saw me, and pressed her index finger to her lips, telling me to be quiet, then pointed to her bed. And there was Natalie, crashed out. My poor baby had such a long day, I don’t think she had a nap, so she’s definitely going to sleep good tonight.
It was such an ‘aw’ moment. She was on her back, her arms over her head, snoring ever so slightly. It was literally the cutest thing.
“Do you want me to take her-” I couldn’t even finish my sentence.
“No, no. She‘s already fast asleep.” My Mom said a little too fast. I eyed her until she laughed sheepishly. “I kind of want her to stay here with me. I don‘t get too much time with her.”
I laughed. “Mom, you‘re acting like she‘s going to disappear.”
“I know.” She smiled down at Natalie as she climbed into her bed. “And I wanted to give Everett and you some privacy.” she winked.
I felt my face flush. “Mom.” I warned her.
“I know how young love is.” She went on.
“Oh my god. Stop, please.” I could feel the heat embarrassment radiating off me.
“Just use protection-”
I covered my ears. “I am not hearing this!” I whispered harshly.
I sighed and uncovered my ears when I thought she was done. “I want a second grandkid, just not now.” She let out fast, and gave me a sweet smile.
“That‘s it.” I turned around. Talking about sex with your parents has to be the most awkward thing in the world.
“Goodnight, Michelle.” My mom laughed.
She was enjoying this. “Goodnight, mother of mine.” I walked over to the bedside quickly, before my mom could say anything else. “Night, Natalie.” I whispered as I gave her a kiss on her forehead.
I walked quickly to the door, almost making it out. Almost. “Please use protection!” she whispered loudly.
I puffed my cheeks out at her and turned back around, facing the hallway, and finally made it out before anything else slipped out of her mouth.
The cool air in the hallway is just what I needed to cool down my hot face. “My Mom.. is something else.” I said to myself in a whisper.
Suddenly, I was aware that the whole house was silent. Everyone was asleep or going to be.
I started to head towards Everett room, but started slowing down. Was he really serious about the cuddling? I mean, I was, but I don‘t know if he was too.
Nervously, I stood in front of his door. My suitcase is in there, so I’m going to have to go in whether I want to or not. Sighing, I softly knocked instead of barging in, I wouldn’t want to catch him naked or anything. Not that I would mind, like, at all.
After a few seconds the door opened and looked down at me. He raised an eyebrow. “You know you could have came right in, right?” he held the door open, as I went under his arm.
“I wasn‘t sure if you were… decent?”
“You act like you haven‘t seen me nake-”
I cut him off quickly. “I know.” I sighed. “It‘s been awhile, or have you forgotten already?”
He sighed as he went to lay down on the bed. “No, I haven‘t.”
It was silent for a bit. “I‘m, uh, going to go change.” I went to my suitcase and grabbed the first pair of shorts and tank top I saw.
“You could change in here. I swear I won‘t look.” he seemed serious enough.
“Swear?”
“I swear.” he nodded, closing his eyes.
“Okay.” I said quietly. Not really sure if he heard or not, I quickly took off my clothes, and hurryingly put on the shorts and tank top I grabbed. I stared at him the whole time, and not once did he tried to peak. That’s a first.
“Are you finished yet?” he mumbled sounding really tired all of a sudden. Or maybe he was getting impatient.
“Uh, yeah.” I nodded, collecting my clothes on the floor and flung them so they landed on my suitcase.
“Then come lay down with me already.” he put his hands behind his head
I felt my worry lines starting to come out. “Are you okay?”
“No.” he stated bluntly.
Okay. “What‘s wrong?”
“My girlfriend doesn‘t want to cuddle with me.”
I couldn’t help but laugh slightly. “Really?”
“Yes.” he groaned.
I crawled up front the foot of the bed to my side. “Happy now?” I said as I crawled under the sheets.
“Very.” He turned on his side, facing me.
I nodded closing my eyes and gave him a smile. “Good.”
“Can I get a kiss?”
I gasped in fake shock. “Are you actually asking?”
He chuckled and cupped one of my cheeks. “Yes, Michelle.”
I lifted my hand, and cupped his cheek giving him a small peck on the tip of his nose. “Good night.”
“No.” he whined when I went back to laying on my back.
“Now what?” I turned my head to see him giving me a pouting face. “You‘re being such a baby tonight.”
Rolling his eyes, he used his elbow to prop himself up. “I just want your attention and love.” he mumbled as he buried his head in the base of my neck.
“Everett-” I stopped once I felt him kissing my neck. “S-stop.” I stuttered while pushing against his chest slightly.
Lie.
Lie, lie, lie.
I didn’t want him to stop, and I prayed he didn’t. It’s been so long since it was just us alone, I just wanted to cherish this time.
“Are you sure?” he dragged his lips up and down my neck.
“Yes.” I lied.
He smirked, as if knowing I was lying. Maneuvering so he was hovering above me, he asked me the same question from earlier. “Can I get a kiss now?”
I laid there, frozen, I still wasn‘t use to him asking. He usually just stole them, which I didn‘t mind too much. “Yes.”
I closed my eyes, and waited. It felt like forever but finally I finally felt his soft lips on mine. Slow at first, then getting more urgent by the second. He finally pulled away and kissed the tip of my nose. I didn‘t want him to stop anymore. “Sorry.” He sighed, resting his forehead against mine.
I shook my head. “Don‘t stop.” I whispered.
He opened his eyes, the green of his eyes was suddenly became darker. Lust. “Don‘t say that.”
He tried to pull away, but I wrapped my legs around his waist tightly and grabbed his upper arms. “Please?”
“Michelle..” he trailed off once he saw my face. I don’t know what came over me all of a sudden, but now I was the one that wanted love and attention. “Don‘t cry. Please?”
I didn’t even noticed until I felt something slide down the side of my face. “I just..” I trailed off to wipe the tear. “I..”
“What? Tell me what‘s wrong?” he sort of laughed as he cupped my cheek.
“You don‘t want me?” I sniffled loudly, which was gross.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. Smiling he said. “The problem is, I always want you, Michelle.”
What was the problem then?
He shook his head again. “Michelle, I‘m just not sure if you‘re ready..” he trailed off. “I want you to be absolutely sure, that this is what you want.”
“But, I am.” I turned my head away.
He finally sighed, caving in. “I‘m never going to be able to say ‘no‘ to you, am I?” he laughed slightly, shaking his head.
He pressed his lips against mine again. “You don‘t have to if you don‘t want to-”
“I already told you, Angel. I always want you.”
I felt new tears start forming in my eyes. Cupping his cheeks in my hands I told him the only words that came to my mind after he said that. “I love you.”
He smiled so big, it made me so happy knowing I could make him that happy. “And I love you more.”
I ran my hands through his hair. “You‘re amazing.” I whispered, staring at this handsome man in front of me. I couldn’t believe he was all mine.
He smiled, and suddenly became serious. “Are you absolutely positive about this?”
“Absolutely.” I nodded.
~
I woke up to the smell of food, not sunlight or good morning kisses, but food. As soon as I was alert enough, my stomach started growling as if saying, ‘hurry or we’re going to die’.
“Someone‘s hungry.” I heard Everett whisper in a sleepy voice.
“Sorry.” I whispered, snuggling deeper into his side.
“You‘re sorry you‘re stomach growled?” he sort of yawned and chuckled at the same time.
“I guess so.” I closed my eyes and kissed his chest.
“Mm, do that again.” And there went that sweet moment.
“Stop.” I told him slapping his arm a little. “I‘m going to shower.”
As soon as I started to scoot away, his arm tightened around me. “No, babe.” He still sounded sleepy.
“Yes. Now, let go.” I pushed against his chest, and didn’t budge.
“Nope.”
“Fine.”
“Good.”
“I really want to shower though.” I sighed.
“Just a few more minutes.” he yawned.
“Did I tire you out last night or what?” I just couldn’t help myself from saying it.
He nodded. “I would think you would be too, but then I asked myself, ‘who did most of the work?’”
“Everett.” I pinched him slightly.
He just smiled. “Plus, who was the one that wanted to do it over, and over, and over, and over-”
I felt my face heat up, and buried it into his chest. “I get it.” I mumbled.
“You‘re so cute.” he laughed. “Better go shower so we can go feed that sad stomach of yours.” As soon as he said that, it growled on que.
“Yes.” I held out the ‘s’ longer than needed.
Climbing out of bed and grabbing some clothes, I looked back to see him drifting back to sleep it seemed like. I guess, he actually is really tired.
Closing the bathroom door, I looked in the mirror and was shocked at the site. My hair screamed ‘bed hair’, it was this way, and the way, and so messy. I looked at my body to see some bruises forming and quickly locked the door so Everett couldn’t see. Last thing I need is for him to feel horrible all day long.
Quickly drying myself, I put on some blue jean shorts, and a racer back top. Simple, but cute. At least to me.
“Are you okay?” Was the first thing Everett asked me when I came out of the bathroom.
He was showered already, and dressed in a white v-neck shirt, and some dark blue jeans. Simple. And yet so handsome in it. I’m just so lucky.
“What do you mean?” I bent over grabbing my hair to put in a messy bun.
“You know exactly what I mean.” he sat on the edge of the bed, eyeing my body.
“I‘m fine.” I sighed as I wrapped my hair band around my bun.
“Come here.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I said so.”
“Michelle.”
“Everett.” I bent over to look for my Sperry, which were somewhere in my luggage. Somewhere.
“Angel, please.” he grabbed my wrist pulling me over to him.
“Ugh.” I groaned sadly.
He lifted my shirt, and what do you know a bruise was staring him right in the face. “Do they hurt?” He looked up at me, feeling so guilty.
“No actually.” I looked down at my stomach, examining them.
“I-”
“No.”
“What?” he stared up at me.
“I loved every minute of last night, Everett, and you‘re not going to ruin this feeling I have right now. So what I have a couple of bruises.” I shrugged. “It just reminds me of how amazing it was.”
He started laughing. Hard. “You‘re too perfect.” he kissed my forehead. “I am sorry though. I just need to be more gentle.”
“I like it rough.” I winked, putting on my shoes. The look on his face was priceless, like he didn‘t expect me to say something like that.
“Well, this is awkward.” Riley stated loudly.
I turned to face him wide eyed. “It was a joke, I swear.”
“Sure it was, ya nasty!” he whispered loudly.
“Riley!” I whined.
“What‘s up?” Miles came around the corner to stand next to Riley.
“Well, apparently, Michelle likes it ‘rough‘.” he used air quotations.
“What?” Miles started to laugh.
“I said the same thing. I don‘t know. I didn’t know we had a freak on our hands, man.”
“Guys.” Everett couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Don‘t worry Ev‘s, Michelle‘s secret is safe with me.” But then he whispered to Miles. “Not really.”
~
I came to the kitchen to see my munchkin with all her grandparents. “Pawpaw.” she called for Everett’s dad.
“What is it, pumpkin?” He looked down from the pancakes he was cooking on the strove to her.
“Papa?” She was asking him where the food was.
He chuckled. ”Almost ready!”
She smiled and nodded. “Okay!” while walking to the dining room to find her grandma’s.
“Smells delicious.” I told Everett’s dad.
He laughed again. “Thanks. It‘s almost ready, so you better go get you a seat in the dining room.”
“Aye, aye, sir.” I nodded.
As I found my seat between my mom and Everett, I look to see Natalie was sitting on Miles’ lap telling him to make more funny faces. Everything was just perfect.
“So, you guys are leaving tomorrow? As much as we want you guys to stay here forever, my husband and I completely understand that you all have jobs, and such.” Sadness laced Everett’s mom’s voice. “But you‘re more than welcome to visit us anytime, and I hope the same applies to My husband and myself to your house, Shannon.”
“Oh! Of course, you‘re welcome anytime.” My mom gave her a big smile.
“We‘re leaving tomorrow?” I asked my mom quickly, my eyes slightly wide.
“Yes, Michelle.” She smiled sadly at me.
“But..”
“We have jobs, sweetie.” She shrugged one of her shoulders giving me another sad smile. “Your boss is pretty lenient but it‘s time to get back.”
I knew she was right. “But I…” The words weren’t coming out. I turned to Everett to see him starring down at the table, until he felt my gaze on him. He looked up at me with the saddest eyes, then to Natalie.
“I‘m sorry, Michelle.” My mom grabbed one of my hands and gave it a soft squeeze.
I shook my head. “No. It‘s just.. It‘s fine.” I faked a smile.
~
We made it back to our room, but Everett had said anything. He‘s been so quiet, even at breakfast. ”Everett?”
“Hm?” Was his response as he sat on the edge of the bed.
“Are you okay?”
“I don‘t know. I mean obviously not.” he cracked a small smile.
“It‘ll be fine.” I told him. “We‘ll be fine.”
“I‘m coming with you.” he sort of whispered to himself.
“Excuse me?” I raised both my eyebrows.
“I barely got you back, and I finally met my daughter. I‘m not missing out anymore, Michelle.” he seemed sort of scared. Like if we were going to disappear on him.
“Everett.” I let out an airy laugh.
“I‘m serious.”
“You‘re crazy.” I shook my head smiling.
“That‘s what love can do to a person.” he stood up and walked until he was in front of me. Leaning down so his lips we inches from mine. “Love can make a person do crazy things.”
I took a few steps back to put some space between us. “Okay, mister. Where would you live exactly?” I crossed my arms over my chest.
“Well,” he bit his bottom lip, which he needs to stop doing, because that looks so amazingly hot. “if my wonderful, amazing girlfriend would be so nice…” he trailed off.
I know exactly what he was thinking. “You want to come live with me?” Even though I knew what he was going to say, I still sounded surprised.
“Well.” he laughed sheepishly. “I can always get my own apartment.”
I shook my head not wanting to answer his question, so I ask him something else. “What about a job?”
“Well, I‘m pretty sure I can get my old teaching job back without a problem.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
“You really are serious, aren‘t you?”
“Absolutely.” he grinned. “Do you think you could live with me?” he smirked.
“I‘m pretty sure I can manage, somehow.” I laughed sheepishly, pushing my hair behind my ears.
“Are you sure though? I mean, I could always get my own apartment-”
“I think that‘s the best idea.” Miles cut in.
I turned to see Miles not like this idea whatsoever. “Listening in, huh, Miles?” Everett stared at him.
“I just happened to be passing by.” he turned his gaze to me. “Only say ‘yes‘ if you‘re absolutely positive, Michelle. Think of the consequences if anything went wrong.”
Everett sighed. “He‘s right.”
Miles laughed. “Did you actually say that?”
“Shut up.”
“No, no, wait. Let me bask in this feeling I‘m feeling right now.” he stood up straighter, and held his head up high.
Everett rolled his eyes, and turned to me. “It‘s a big decision. You should think about it first.”
“Okay.” I nodded my head slowly.
“That why I can get in contact with the school, and see what they say. I‘m pretty sure they haven‘t found anybody to replace me, except for substitutes. So, I‘m pretty sure they‘ll be glad to have me back.”
“Sounds good.” I nodded again.
“Give her a week, and I‘m pretty sure she‘ll have an answer.” Miles came to stand next to me. “Michelle‘s smart, sometimes.” I nudged his ribs with my elbows. “She‘ll make the best decision for Natalie, and herself.” He wrapped and arm around my shoulder, which caused Everett to tense up. “Just don‘t come crying to Riley and myself, when she tells you ‘no‘.”
“Hey!” Riley came in out of breath sort of. “I‘ve been looking for you guys.” he breathed. “No one told me we were have a meeting.” he shook his head.
“Everett wants to move back, and live with Michelle.” Miles informed him.
“Hell no. no. no. no.” he shook his head back and forth. “I’m barely excepting the fact that she took you back, and I’ll be damned if I let you actually live with her.” I stared at him shocked. This is totally out of character for him.
“Riley.” I whispered."Riley, man." Miles tried to get him to stop.
“No.” he turned to look at Miles, and me. “Look at all he‘s done up until this point. Fuck no to you guys living together.” This was the first time I ever heard him talk like this, or even get slightly riled up.
“And I told her I‘m sorry.” I could hear Everett trying to keep his cool.
“You think sorry fixes everything, don‘t you?” Riley laughed without humor. “Well, heads up. It doesn‘t.”
“I know that.” I saw Everett jaw clench.
“You say that, but do you really? Breaking someone‘s heart isn‘t something ‘sorry‘ could fix. Ever.” he stood in front of Everett, which made me nervous. “When you break someone’s heart, it breaks like a mirror. Into a million pieces. I mean, sure you can put the pieces back together, but you can still see the fucking cracks.”
And Everett looked taken aback at what he said.
He took a few steps back, but suddenly his legs started getting wobble, and he slumped to the floor.
Everett did something in front of his two best friends, in the world, that I would never, ever thought he would ever do.
He broke down.
