The Maze Runner (Newt X Reader)

Job Selection Chapter 2

"So this is my job, a Runner, we run the maze and try to find a way out!" I say to the greenie. She nods an 'ok' and I continue, "But only certain people get the job, they have to pass the test. The med-jacks are like doctors, the builders build huts and things. You could be a cook and then there's other jobs but they ether involve slaughtering animals or being cleaners so I won't make you choose out of those ones, you could be a farmer as well, with Newt." I say.

"Ok." She answers, she doesn't look at me, just takes in her surroundings.

"Do you wanna be a med-jack for the day?" I ask, she mumbles another 'ok', hmm she's very quiet, oh well, I like her. "Ok, Jeff is the guy you should talk to, I'll introduce you to him and then get back to work!" I walk her to the med-jack hut, introduce her to Jeff and head back to the runner hut, I look at some maps and try to get some idea of how to get out.

I was left with Jeff and Clint by Emma, the nice girl who showed me around, we bandaged up some builders, cleaned up some cuts and scratches then they said I could be done for he day.

Once I was done I went to find Emma, I looked around the fields, no Em. I searched the edge of the forest, not a signs of her.
I decided to go to the homestead to see if she finished early and went home.

I open the door, "Emma?" I say in my little voice.

"GreenBean?" I turn around to see Newt.

"Um, h-hi, where's um Emma?" I ask trying not to blush from his stare.

"She's probably in the runners hut, but you won't be able to access her there, it's for runners only, I can't even get in." He answers.

I nod, "Ok." I say, I sit down in a chair and sigh in boredom and frustration. Newt takes a seat next to me.

"So, are you just going to sit here and wait for Em to finish work, or are you going to do something?" he asks.

"I don't know, what else is there to do? I finished work for the day and Emma's my only friend!" I say.

"Well let's change that, I'll be your friend, and we could go get some lunch from frypan!" Newt suggests.

"Sure." I smile. We walk to the kitchen area along the stone floor.

"Frypan, can we have some lunch please?!" Newt asks with his thick British accent. Frypan passes us two sandwiches, we go take a seat at a table together, "Enjoying your first day in the glade, greenbean?" Newt asks with a smirk.

"Yeah, it's pretty nice here!" I respond and he gives me a little smile before he looks away to wave at someone. I turn to see who, Emma and Minho.
They join us and start talking with each other, I just sit there and try not to get involved with the conversation.

"Greenie, what's your thoughts on being a med-jack?" Minho asks.

"Um, it's good." I mumble.

"Wow, that's the first bloody time I've heard her say anything like that without saying 'ok'!" Newt jokes, we laugh and then talk some more.

"I think I need some sleep." I say standing.

"I'll take you to your bed" Emma says standing with me.

We walk towards the homestead "Emma" I ask.

"Yes greenie?" She responds sweetly.

"Why can't I remember my name?" I ask. It's been worrying me since I woke in the box, how is it possible to forget a name, let alone everything besides common knowledge. I just don't understand.

"Well no one really knows, the 'creators' sent us here in the box, like you, and they wiped our memories except for our names and, in Newt and I, our siblings in the maze." she says. She sounded just as confused as I did.

"Well, didn't you say that Teresa woke up and said Thomas? They're not siblings, are they?" I question.

"Well I don't know much more than you greenie but maybe it's because they were really close before the glade." She suggests as we reach the door to the girls hut. "You'll be sleeping in here with Teresa and I, the boys will be in the bigger one next door. Your bed's that one!" She says pointing to the hammock on the left, next to the one she's siting on, Teresa must own the right one. I sit on my bed "Here's a pillow and blanket." Emma says throwing them at me.

I laugh "Thanks!" and then make my bed. Soon we both settle into our beds and doze off to sleep.
