Lips Of An Angel

Honey, why you calling me so late?
It's kinda hard to talk right now.
Honey, why are you crying? Is everything okay?
I gotta whisper 'cause I can't be too loud.

Alyssa was woken up by the sound of the phone on the bedside table ringing. She quickly sat up and answered it to be sure that the ringing wouldn't wake up the person sleeping next to her.

"Hello?" She whispered.

There was a sob on the line, "Ly..." was let out but the sentence was immediately cut off.

Alyssa pulled the covers off her legs as she stood up and rushed out of the room, "Dennise?"

The voice sobbed again, "Yeah."

"Why are you crying? Are you alright?"

Well, my man's in the next room,
Sometimes I wish he was you.
I guess we never really moved on.

"No, he yelled at me again," Dennise cried. Alyssa shook her head while she listened. She knew that she was referring to her husband, "He's blaming it on me."

"Wait, blaming what?" She sat down on their couch and waited for her answer.

She heard the former libero sigh, "I know he doesn't really mean it. He's just upset that he didn't get his contract with Ginebra... but he's yelling at me. He's upset and he's yelling at me and pulling on my arm all the time."

Alyssa couldn't say anything, she just listened. The truth was, she loved her; she always would... and her voice, even though it was broken, was beautiful.

It's really good to hear your voice saying my name,
It sounds so sweet.
Coming from the lips of an angel,
Hearing those words, it makes me weak.

And I never wanna say goodbye,
But, girl, you make it hard to be faithful,
With the lips of an angel.

"Alyssa?"

She shook her head, guessing she was done talking, "Yes?"

Dennise drew in a shaky breath, "I'm sorry... I seem to always run back to you when something goes wrong," she paused, "it's just that I miss you, and I-I know I shouldn't. But I do. And I love you, I love you so much and I can't stop and I-I just think about you all the time, it's like I'm mentally cheating on LA, and I shouldn't be... I shouldn't and I can't and, I-I just..."

"Den," She stopped her. She had heard it all before, it was like a weekly confession. She shook her head; she loved hearing it, but it always left her heartbroken.

It's funny that you're calling me tonight,
And, yes, I've dreamt of you too,
And does he know you're talking to me?
Will it start a fight?
No, I don't think she has a clue.

"I love you, Dennise." She whispered to her.

"Ly... I-I well, I mean I love you too, but I-I'm married, and you're married. We made the decision to get married, and not to each other... so I-I know I want to be with you, but I can't - we can't..." She stopped because the crying started again.

Well, my man's in the next room,
Sometimes I wish he was you.
I guess we never really moved on.

Alyssa shook her head and swallowed the lump in her throat. She remembered the day all too well. The day Dennise Lazaro broke her heart again.

She was with with Kiefer still, but she knew that she didn't love him. She knew she couldn't love him... not the way she loved Dennise. She could never love him that way. However, Dennise was dating someone else and they didn't even live close together anymore.

They were twenty-seven years old and she and Kiefer were living in Makati. Dennise had just moved to Makati with her boyfriend about half a year and the four of them had started to hang out frequently. That's how she and Dennise fell in love again. However, neither one of them wanted to risk the heartbreak again, so no one said a thing. Neither of them tried.

At twenty-eight, Dennise showed up on Kiefer and Alyssa's doorstep one day in March.

"Denden, hello!" Kiefer greeted.

"Hi." Dennise waved from her place on the porch. "I have big news!" She said.

Alyssa appeared behind her boyfriend and smiled, "Hey, Den."

Dennise gave her a soft smile before Kiefer pulled her inside, "Denden has news!" He said excitedly before closing the door.

Alyssa shrugged, "What's up? You want something to drink?"

The blue-eyed girl shook her head, "No thanks," she shook her head, "I can't stay long."

Kiefer smiled, "Well, what's you news?" He asked, the excitement never leaving his voice.

The volleybelle-turned-doctor smiled, "I'm engaged!"

Alyssa's eyes widened, "What?"

Dennise gave her a gentle smile once again, "I'm engaged." She repeated.

Kiefer's smile widened, "That's awesome!"

"You and LA are getting married?" Alyssa asked. She couldn't believe it.

Dennise nodded, "Yeah, there's no date or anything yet..." She smiled, "we're going to start planning at dinner. That's why I can't stay."

"Congratulations, Denden! Send my regards to LA." Kiefer smiled.

Dennise looked at the basketball phenom who was now going in for a hug. Looking over his shoulder, Dennise watched Alyssa's face fall in misery. She shook her head.

Once Kiefer pulled away, he looked at Alyssa, "Isn't that great?" He asked.

Alyssa nodded and did her best to smile, "Yeah, it is... congrats, Dennise."

Alyssa shook her head yet again to get rid of the memory. It was three years ago that Dennise married LA, they now had a kid. Alyssa wanted so much to be with her, to divorce her husband and love the woman who would always have her heart. However, the porcelain-skinned girl wouldn't do it, she wouldn't divorce LA. She knew she loved her husband, not nearly as much as she loved Alyssa, but she did love LA... she always stated that she wouldn't want to put Alex, their son, through a divorce... she didn't believe in divorce anyway.

"I shouldn't have called... God, I'm so stupid. I-I'm so, so sorry, Alyssa. I'm so sorry." Dennise said shakily.

"Wait no... Den!" She tried to talk to her, but she hung up.

She looked at the phone in her hand before punching the end button and walking back to her bedroom. She put the phone back on the table before laying down next to her husband, the man she could never love as much as Dennise: Kiefer Ravena.

Honey, why you calling me so late?
