XVI. She Says, He Says

"What the fuck!" Richard's whispered outburst made Monica flinch. She pulled at her fingers under the table, watching Richard's face. "Yes," he said after a while.

She waited in anticipation as he turned silent, listening to whatever the caller was telling him. And then his eyes fixed on her, bore on her, making the hairs on her nape stand up.

What is it? Do they know?

Monica swallowed, willing her gaze to stay connected to Richard's. She couldn't waver now.

Finally he put down the phone, his jaw tight, his gaze intense.

"What is it? Was that Theo?"

He offered a curt nod.

"What did he say?"

His eyes looked into her for a long time before he finally uttered, "Kane is dead."

Monica's eyes widened and her heart started to hammer against her chest. This time, she blinked away from Richard's gaze.

"You don't look surprised."

"I am," she admitted. "But what do you expect me to feel, Richard? I barely know the lady."

"The fact that someone got to her in just a matter of a days after you went underground is something to ponder about, Monica."

Her brows furrowed into a frown. "Are you suggesting I killed her?"

"Did you?"

"Of course not!"

His eyes locked with hers and after a long breathless moment, he finally nodded. "Good. Because if you did, you will never want to know what I will do to you."

"I did not kill her."

"If you say so."

"I am telling you the truth."

"If you say so." He finally stood up and grabbed the files he brought with him earlier. "I better get back. It's late. You need to sleep."

Monica nodded and watched him walk to her closet, up to his hole and disappeared.

It was only then that she let out a shaky breath.

What happened that afternoon with Kane flashed before her eyes...

"I am glad that you found the time, dear. I thought your father had decided to glue you to his side," Kane said when she sat across from her in the café.

"He gives me a leeway from time to time."

Kane looked over her shoulder where her guards were standing by. "Are you wired?"

"Good," Kane said under her breath. "This will not be long."

"What is it?"

"I am working with someone to build something as big as the Liaisons."

Monica's brows shot up. She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat uncomfortably. "With the Karlssons?"

Kane shook her head. "Someone else. I want you to join us."

Could this lady offer more surprises? She frowned. "Why me? Why not the brothers?"

"I am working on them. Are you in?"

"If you do this, you know you will have a big problem with Victor."

"The brothers are on their way to bringing the old man down. We need you, Monica. You brush shoulders with the most powerful members of the Liaisons."
