From her talk with Barabbas Shea knew that some changes took longer than others did. Ichiro was back in the house now after Penny pumped his system with her venom. They had no idea how long it would take for the change to start or for it to end. Everything was watch and see. Martha had the cure for the poison on standby, but the added factors of the situation had her chewing her nails to the quick.
"His body is undergoing so much stress," she told Ava. They were standing out in the hallway. "His heart could give out before the change even finishes."
Ava shushed her. "Shea needs this. Whatever happens, just do what you can."
Martha nodded going back to the room. Ava ran a hand over her face.
"Hey, you okay."
Ava desperately needed to be held, but she couldn't get that comfort from Daniel. Why was she able to solve everyone else's problems but the ones she had happening with her.
"I need to speak to Penny again."
"You're exhausted, Ava."
"I know, but there is more we need to discuss."
"Try it tomorrow," Daniel said. "After you have rested."
He tucked his hands into his pocket. It was an action Ava realized he did whenever she was around. He could be standing there talking to someone else, and as soon as she came over he would stuff his hands into his pocket. Guessing why he did it wasn't hard. Ava tried to have her way on the matter, but Daniel would not have it. She conceded. She did need to rest.
They went to their room, Daniel taking off his shirt before climbing into bed. He pulled back the covers on her side. The only time she removed her cloak was when she was alone with him. Around the others, it helped her to stay hidden to a certain extent. Daniel wanted none of that. Outside of the cloak, her form moved in and out of mist, to looking solid. She floated more than walked to the bed, sliding under the covers. He tucked her in without making contact.
In bed, they laid on their sides looking at each other.
"I need to tell you something." It was a matter she was just finding the courage to discuss. Seeing Shea with Ichiro made her realize how fleeting life was for some. How fleeting Daniel's life was compared to hers.
"What is that?"
"I don't know how this is possible, but if I can figure it out, I can make it work for us," she started.
"Make what work?"
Ava hesitated. This was a topic she was wary about broaching. She forged ahead. "Garrick can somehow touch me."
Daniel's face looked as if she had punched him in the gut. He moved back away from her and she reached for him. On contact, a jolt went through his body. Ava shifted away from him getting off the bed.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm so sorry."
He groaned rubbing his arm where her hand had made contact. "It's fine."
"No, it isn't. You're mad. Hurt."
Daniel said nothing to refute either. Ava had the urge to leave, but this was a problem she needed to face head on.
"We need to find Garrick. Find out why he can touch me. I think a part of me might still be inside of him. If I can get it back, I could replicate the same effect in you."
"And if you can't?"
"Then at least Garrick will lose whatever infatuation he has. His behavior is not solely his fault."
