It was late in the night before they all started to settle down. Miroku decided it was safer for him to sleep there, and soon everyone was asleep. Rin lied awake, rubbing on the crescent moon pendant. She couldn't take her mind off him.
There was a slight shuffle and Rin quickly closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep.
There was a ruffling of fabric before they spoke again.
"What are you doing up?"
"I couldn't go to sleep. I'm too worried about Rin."
Inuyasha sighs. "Yeah."
"First Sesshomaru's toxic whip, then the accelerated healing. What if this is the new Shikon jewel?"
"If it is, all hell is about to break lose." InuYasha sighs and closes his eyes. "I thought I was done with cursed jewelry God dammit."
"My question is, if Sesshomaru left it to protect Rin what is he protecting her from?"
InuYasha snorts. "Sesshomaru has always been obsessed with power. I've heard he practically has Japan in his palm now. He probably dropped Rin off because she was so distracting."
"Please no!" InuYasha ducks his head, bracing himself.
"No, that's not what I mean." Kagome settles in the sheets. "I think Sesshomaru cares too much about Rin, and knew that it was for the best for her to stay here. It's dangerous for a human to be around a demon for too long especially one that is as powerful as him."
"Sesshomaru would never hurt Rin. She's his pet." InuYasha grumbles.
"I'm not talking about Sesshomaru. I'm talking about his enemies. If they ever find out about Rin, she won't be the only one in trouble."
Rin takes in a breath but quickly disguises it as a snore. Kagome sighs.
"Come on let's get some sleep. Nothing we can do about it now."
InuYasha nods and they settle in for sleep. Rin continues clutching the moon pendant.
'Oh Sesshomaru, why can't you be here now?'
As soon as Rin closes her eyes, she opens them again to a different scenery. The inside of Kagome and Inuyasha's home is replaced by a white background. Confused, Rin looks around but she is the only one there.
"Am I dreaming?"
She looks straight ahead and almost immediately familiar, silver strands materialize from the background. Soon, a pair of golden eyes open and the rest of Sesshomaru's body appears.
"Sesshomaru-sama! Oh I'm so glad to see you! It's been so long and I-" Rin tries to run towards him but is stopped by an invisible force. Rin becomes confused.
"What is this?"
Sesshomaru lifts a hand.
"Rin. There are important matters we need to discuss."
"What? What is going on?"
Sesshomaru waves his hand and visualizations of mean looking demons pass in the space between them.
"With each passing day I become stronger, my enemies grow more desperate. But today has shown me just how desperate they are."
The demon that attacked Rin earlier that day rises above them all.
"The necklace only activates when you are in serious danger. I thought putting you in a human village of slayers was enough protection but..." Sesshomaru snarls. "This was no random attack. This was a test."
The skeleton lizard demon disappears in a puff a smoke and her necklace rises above it.
"Once activated, there's no going back. Demons will be able to smell my blood and they will try to get a hold of it. You are the only one that can touch it. Don't take it off no matter what."
The necklace shifts to Kagome, Miroku, and Sango.
"Demons are attracted to power. They will be coming after the necklace again and again. Have them train you. But not InuYasha. He's an idiot."
Sesshomaru waves his hand and the visuals are gone.
"But Lord Sesshomaru, why can't I go back with you? I don't have to stay here."
Sesshomaru looks at her. They stare at each other for a few moments.
Rin looks around. "Is that?"
"Sesshomaru-sama!!" The familiar voice calls out again.
"Jaken. Jaken!! Jaken!!"
A look of annoyance falls over Sesshomaru's face as he calls him again.
"What? No!" Rin looks back at Sesshomaru's stone cold face. "No! You aren't going to leave me again! Please!"
Her surroundings start to blur as Sesshomaru's figure ripples like water.
Rin wakes up, her eyes wide open as her necklace glows a bright gold before fading to its natural metallic hue.
