I yawned and stretched my muscles, kicking Pete who was still beside me on our bed. After I sat on his lap last night, we forgot all about our dinner. It was still sitting on the table cold and dried out.
I got up and headed to the shower. I was happy that Pete was happy, but I kept thinking about how I froze when Rick had me cornered. He still has me under his control. All he needs to do is look at me a certain way and I can't help, but to do as I'm told. I know that I'm going to have to testify, but when I do how will I react to him being there. I have to get over this, cause if I don't he could go free. I just need to tell the truth on the stand. I felt arms wrap around me and pull me back out of the spray.
"You couldn't wait for me?" Pete said.
"I knew you would join me when you woke up. I guess this means we will be having a late breakfast." I said as his lips crashed into mine.
"Are you sure doctor?" I heard Non say as I walked into my mother's house.
"What's wrong?" I asked. Seeing the worry on her face. I looked over at my mother accusingly.
"She's worried about Payton," my mother explained.
"Why?" she motioned to the sleeping baby in the car seat and I picked her up. She seamed fine, but as she yawned and looked up at me I realized the problem. "How..." I looked at baby blue eyes.
"The doctor said it sometime takes a while for eye color to settle, apparently it's not uncommon for a babies eyes to change color," Non explained. I knew why Non wasn't happy about our daughter's new exotic blue eyes; they were exactly like Rick's. This wasn't a good time to have to tell her about the trial, but there really wouldn't ever be a good time.
"Mom can you take Payton and Bradyn for a walk?" I asked. She gave me a puzzled look but got the double stroller and put Bradyn in his snow suit and wrapped Payton in an extra blanket and put them in the stroller. Then she put on her own coat and left me and Non alone. I took her hand and sat next to her on the couch.
"I'm going to testify Frank," she said. She didn't let me speak she just continued. "I am letting him rule my life, with my being afraid of him. I can't let Payton or Bradyn grow up knowing that mommy is scared of something. Moms are invincible and that's what I want to be to them." I didn't know what to say to that.
"What made you come to that conclusion?" she looked at her hands.
"This morning I woke up because of a nightmare. Then I came down stairs to see that my daughter had her father's eyes and I know it doesn't make any sense, but for a moment I was afraid of Payton. Not for her, of her because of her eyes. Then I realized how ridiculous I was being about the trial and all. Besides if he's in jail he can't get custody of Payton." I looked at her in awe.
"Are you sure? I could get more lawyers," she simply nodded and leaned over to kiss me. I wrapped my arm around her and pulled her close. "Okay then I'll tell them to stop trying,"
"When can we go home?" she asked.
"I figure a week here should be enough," I reached out and picked up the remote control. " What do you wanna watch?"
"Lets watch cartoons," she said with a smile. I found the cartoon channel and pulled her closer, this went better than I thought it would.
Danae and I basically spent the whole week in bed together. At this very moment she's tracing her fingers over my bartscull tattoo. I was no longer mad at her, I couldn't be. I have been distracted. I moaned in frustration when the doorbell rang.
