"Of course." He responded. "I'd always come running."
But he didn't even know me. Was it this crazy magical mating stuff?
"Is that intimidating?" He wondered out loud. "I don't mean to come off so strong. I really don't want to scare you."
"It is a little too much." I admitted. But he was clearly making an effort to make me feel comfortable.
"Well, if anything I do is ever overwhelming just say..." He looked around the room. "Ice cube and we'll cool it down. Sound good?"
I giggled. He was weird but I found myself enjoying it. "Sounds good." I agreed.
He grinned when I laughed, "I'm so relieved you're alright."
"What happened to Maverick?"
Jacobi's smile vanished. "He's locked up in a cell right now."
"They arrested him?" My eyes widened.
"Not really... it wasn't your police. It was the local pack. He's in their holding cell. Apparently, the bugger's been sick for a while and has anger issues... He also seemed to have quite an obsession with you." He growled lowly. "I don't like it."
"So he marked me?" I gulped.
Jacobi's eyes flashed black before he took a deep breath and visibly calmed himself. "Yes."
"But Kyle told me that marks from non-mates don't last."
"They don't." He confirmed. "But it'll be there for a while. And it hurts you, I don't like that."
"I can manage." I assured him even though I wasn't so sure. The pain was bearable right now but could it become worse?
"They gave you a lot of pain medication." He said. "Otherwise, you'd be feeling quite worse."
"Where am I exactly?" I looked around. It looked like a regular hospital room to me but I had a feeling it wasn't one.
I bit my lip deliberating if I should ask him for Kyle's whereabouts. Would it upset him? But I really wanted to know where my boyfriend was.
"What is it, Alaska?" He asked calmly as if sensing my agitation.
"Where's... uh Kyle?"
He didn't even flinch. "Out in the hall. I kicked everyone out when I found you. I was a little... unsettled. The doctors have been coming in and out but I can't bear having anyone else in here while you're so vulnerable."
Wow, that escalated quickly. "Ice cube."
He sighed. "I'm sorry, I know it's a little obsessive. But there's a part of me that's crazy possessive over you especially when you're harmed and it's hard for me to control it."
"Can you tell him to come in? I want to see him."
He growled lowly under his breath. I narrowed my eyes, "Jacobi, he's my boyfriend."
His hand formed a fist on his lap. "About that... I'm not so crazy about the idea anymore. Clearly the guy can't protect you."
Was he for real? "You have zero right choosing my boyfriend."
He frowned, "I do, I'm your mate. You shouldn't even have a boyfriend."
"That means nothing to me! I'm not a freaky wolf!" I couldn't help but lose my temper. I just wanted to see Kyle!
Hurt flashed in his eyes and I cursed myself for feeling bad about it.
I took a deep breath. "Look, it was sweet of you to make sure I'm okay but I am. And it wasn't Kyle's fault. In fact, he told me to stay away from his cousin and I didn't take his concerns seriously. I love Kyle and I really want to see him. Please."
"You love him." It wasn't a question so much as a restatement of my own words. I had to look away from Jacobi's face because the pain I saw there was too much to bear.
He pushed his chair back swiftly, disappearing from the room in the blink of an eye. I stared at the shut door in concern. I didn't mean to hurt him. I was actually quite fond of him for the short time we'd known one another. But Kyle fell in a completely different ballpark.
The door reopened and Kyle's familiar face peeked through. I smiled meekly and watched his face fill with relief. "Alaska." He rushed over and grabbed my hands. "Thank God you're okay! I was so freaking worried about you, babe."
"I'm okay." I reassured him. His familiar hazel eyes made me smile wider. He was home to me. "How long was I out?"
"About a day." He took Jacobi's seat next to my bed. "I'm livid. I knew Maverick was a piece of shit."
"Jacobi said he was sick?"
Kyle's eyes dimmed. I didn't know if it was because of the mention of the Prince or because his cousin was sick. "Yeah he definitely has some mental issues. Doctors are running tests. It's just rare in our breed. We don't usually get typical human diseases."
"Who found me?"
He bent his head, shaking it from side to side, as if reliving everything that happened. "It was so fucked, babe." He sighed. "He called me after he marked you. He was frantic. He told me he did something bad and I had to come." His eyes met mine. "You were pale as a sheet, you'd lost so much blood. He was holding you, sobbing. He'd realized he'd fucked up. He kept apologizing as if it would make you better. I'd never seen a worse sight in my life."
So he'd felt remorse after he'd done it. Was Maverick bipolar? Schizophrenic? I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. He'd hurt me but clearly he had issues. "Why is he locked up in a cell? Shouldn't he be getting help?"
"He is getting help from a cell for now. Prince Jacobi came barging in a few hours ago. He practically tore the place down when he found out what happened to you. He nearly murdered Maverick but we got him to calm by bringing him to you. We can't let Maverick out or else Jacobi will snap."
I winced. This was a disaster. "But Jacobi seemed so... calm."
"Only when he's with you." He looked peeved. "I think he's worried he's going to scare you so he's extra cautious. The rest of us don't receive that kind of treatment."
The familiar creak of the door opening made me look up. The devil himself walked in. Jacobi noticed my hand intertwined with Kyle's and he looked away with a frown on his face. Kyle glanced at Jacobi bitterly. The tension was unreal. "The doctors are going to give you some pain meds and you're good to leave." Jacobi announced. "You're coming back home with me."
