Tadashi takes a deep breath as he steps out of the café. The warm air kisses his skin. "Whoa-" Hiro says, stepping out behind his brother, "it's warm out.""That's because it's the first day of spring, knucklehead," Tadashi says. "If you'd look away from that fighting bot, maybe it wouldn't have come as a surprise."
"Ha, ha." Hiro shoves his hands into the pockets of his shorts. "Let's just go get your girlfriend and go, okay?"
Tadashi chuckles and nods, jogging to the driver's side of his Aunt Cass's green pickup truck. Hiro jumps in the middle. "Seatbelt," Tadashi orders sternly, refusing to pull out of the parking space until Hiro is fastened safely. Hiro groans and quickly clips the belt in. Tadashi carefully starts to pull away from the café.
You're waiting by the window when he pulls into your driveway. Tadashi climbs out of the car and takes his hat off, tossing it onto the driver's side. You throw open the front door and grin at your boyfriend, gratefully allowing him to take you into his arms.
"Missed you," he murmurs against your hair. It's been a long week of midterms, keeping you and Tadashi apart.
"I missed you more," you whisper, titling your head and smashing his lips against yours. Your fingers tangle around his raven hair.
He pulls back and smiles. "Do you have the basket?"
You bend down and snatch it by the handle. "Yup! Honey Lemon's still bringing everything else, right?"
"Right," he says, grabbing your hand.
You reach up and kiss his cheek. Tadashi chuckles and opens the passenger door for you. "Hey, Hiro," you greet.
"Hey, ___," he says, waving a greeting. "Please tell me you brought pie."
"Cherry," you say.
"Yes!" he exclaims, a grin stretching wide over his face. "C'mon, big bro, we've gotta get going!"
"Please," you say, "before he rips the basket from my hands."
Your boyfriend laughs as he starts up the car. "Calm down, Hiro. The park's just a couple of miles away."
Tadashi rolls the windows down as he drives towards San Fransokyo Park. The afternoon sunshine is a bright soft yellow, warm on your skin as the cool breeze chills you. You catch your boyfriend taking sideways glances at you every now and then.
By the time you reach the park, your friends are already at the usual spot. A giant cherry blossom tree, now in full bloom, shades a plaid blanket. They all cheer as you walk up the steep hill. Hiro takes the bag of balls and rackets out of the back, Tadashi takes the picnic basket. He holds your hand as you both make your way up.
"Woo-hoo!" Fred cheers.
"Happy spring!" Honey Lemon says.
"Happy spring," you say, flashing a wide grin.
She holds up a pitcher of ice cold strawberry lemonade and starts pouring you and Tadashi a cup. You all group together. "Here's to warm weather and lots of fun!" she cheers.
"And allergies," Wasabi adds dryly, sniffling as a cherry blossom branch blows in the wind. "Can't forget the allergies."
"Let's eat!" Fred practically shouts. Hiro nearly dives into the basket.
You and Honey neatly make plates for everyone. Ham sandwiches, strawberries, potato salad, chips, macaroni and cheese, and pie. You're soon stuffed. You lazily lay against Tadashi, one of his arms draped over your shoulders, his fingers latched onto yours.
"That was wonderful," Wasabi says, wiping his face.
"I'll say," Fred mumbles, slowly lifting his last fork full of cherry pie into his mouth.
"Go Go," Honey says, "wanna play some badminton?"
"Don't have to ask me twice," she says, hopping up and popping her fingers. She jerks her thumb at Wasabi and Fred. "You're gonna play us today. Ready to get beat, boys?"
"No," Wasabi answers truthfully.
"Too bad!" she replies with a smirk, lifting Wasabi up and hitting Fred's head. "Let's go!"
Hiro follows. "I'll make sure the game is fair."
"Is that a fancy way of you saying that you're going to let the boys win?" Tadashi taunts.
Hiro shrugs and laughs. "Depends on who's willing to give up the last piece of pie later." With that, he jogs off.
You look at the nearly empty pie tin and shake your head. "If he thinks that he's getting it, he's crazy. This one is ours for later."
Tadashi chuckles and kisses your head. "Have you had fun, sweetie?"
"Mhm," you hum. Sighing, you look up at him. "I love spring. Like, a lot."
"I know you do." He smiles. "You're always so happy when we're outside."
"It's just... so warm and welcoming. The sun isn't that bright white like it is in winter, or that burning orange like summer. It's just yellow, just soft. And everything's new. New leaves, new animals... it's really pretty."
"You're amazing," Tadashi compliments with a sigh. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
You smile sadly. "This winter... I thought that was the last season I'd have with you." You look down and grab his hand in both of yours. "After the fire happened, and you were in that coma-" You swallow. "I was just so afraid that I wouldn't get to spend another year with you."
"You don't have to be afraid," he whispers. "I'm here now, and I'll stay for a long, long time."
You lift your head to meet his eyes. He leans down and kisses you gently. "You'd better," you say, wrapping your arms around his torso, "because I wanna snuggle with you underneath trees for a long time."
He smiles and drags his fingers through your soft hair. "Sounds good to me, ___. I wouldn't want anything else in the world." He looks up at the blue sky, grateful to be able to see another spring with you at his side.
