INÊS WAKES UP WITH a throbbing head, a heavy art, and a sore body. Her lips are busted open, and she finds it hard to let out a coherent sentence. She brings her frail hands to her face, the fingers brushing against her black eye. Wildly, she pushes her hair out of her face, her tear stricken face but a sign of distress. She notices her surroundings, takes them in, and then realises that she has no idea about her whereabouts.
"Is anyone there?" She manages to say, her throat parched by the lack of liquids. Her voice, a strange sound, bounces off the empty hallways. She's enveloped by the darkness, consumed by the obliviousness of it all. She stumbles up, her palms stretching on the wall to find some sort of a leeway.
She finds none.
Unable to hold herself up, she leans against the walls. Breathes in, breathes out. Tries to remember how she got here, but comes up with nothing.
Still pressed against the cool metal, she begins to walk forward, her feet clashing against each other in a battle of dominance. It's like her body is restricting her mind, shutting it out. She has no choice but to stumble. And fall. And keep doing it, until she gets out.
Twenty minutes later, she kneels down, her body giving up. Her breaths come out in short puffs, her heart beating at an erratic rate. Her eyes wide, palms clammy, she feels herself mix with the wall, become a part of the metal. She thrashes, lunges, jumps, but stays as she is.
And then she falls.
