Kaylee's POV

My vision was slightly foggy as my eyes started to flutter open. As I awakened more fully and my senses increased, I could smell the pungent stench of sweat lingering in the air.

I blinked hard several times, trying to clear my vision. I looked around the room and noticed 7 other small, white cots, other than the one I was sitting on. Laying in each cot was a small, dark shape.

The room was cloaked in darkness, except for a small sliver of light that peaked through the crack in the wooden doorway.

The ray of light fell upon the face of one of these dark shapes and I could make out a small portion of her face.
Old makeup stained her face, yet what didn't remain on her face seemed to have made its way onto her pillow. Other than the makeup, her features seemed young, possibly about 12 or 13.

A loud creak filled the room and my eyes shot towards the door.

The door sounded like it was screaming as it was slowly pushed open by yet another dark form. A small boy emerged from the faint light and closed the door partially.

"Hey," I whisper yelled, hoping to get his attention.

His head snapped towards me with a look of shock that anyone else would be awake at this hour. He hesitated, but started to come towards me and stood near the end of my cot. "Hello," he whispered back at me.

"Where are we?" I asked.

He was silent for a moment, but my mind was desperately seeking answers. "Please." I begged him to answer me, voice wavering with fear.

"The big scary man took you here and one day you will leave." He whispered this so quietly, I could barely hear him.

Before I could ask what he meant by this, he disappeared from the room in a flash and with a loud scream from the door, he was gone.

One day you will leave.

His words continued repeating in my head, over and over again. As I processed them, a deep, nauseating feeling seeped deep into my bones. I rolled over in the cot and shut my eyes tightly, just hoping that maybe the next day would never come.
