Light In The Distance

"Look, Im telling you that there is something out there! All I ask is for you to allow for a few of the people to accompany me." The voice of the village custos sounds from across the dining hall with a boom of her voice and clattering of her dish as it slams into the wall painting it with the contents of her meal creating a grusome image of destruction. Slowly all heads turn in the direction of our village dux to watch his reaction to the head custos's challenge. Slowly the old man stands his power ringing throughout the room causing the hairs on the back of alls necks to raise to attention and intensify as the custos releases her own and stands alowing the plates of her armor to rustle and rub together in the silence of the room. With a sigh the dux speaks, "Kahrin, I do not control what you do, you do as you wish, but I will not risk the lives of our people for this idiotic quest you wish to go on. You know as well as I do that venturing into that forest will only lead to your death. There is nothing but monsters in there; so if you want to die that badly go ahead and go. But again I will not request anyone to travel with you to face their own distruction. That light is just that, a light. Something left of the old way of life." Bristling with anger Kahrin snarls at the old guy and storms from the room, spear in hand and pack strapped to her should. A few of us children and some adults follow to watch her in hope she will stop; slowly she approaches the edge and is about to take that final step when I call out and run to her.

        "KAHRIN! "

Turning around she looks at me sharply then softens her stare and smiles at me. "Ah little one.." Crying I take hold of the cloth hanging down from her right hip and pull slightly wanting to ask her if I could join, I want to travel with her. Pating me on the head she prys my hand from her and reaches into her pack pulling from it a small dagger wich she looks at fondly and hand to me.

"When I was young little one, my father gave this to me before he left." She looks at me and her smile slowly wilts; patting me on the head once more she places the item in my hand and wave goodbye taking that final step and dissipearing into the darkness with only slight flashes of her blond hair to prove she is still moving within, before that too is gone.

Turning back I walk slowly to the others and sit waiting to see if anything would happen; after a few minutes a large crash comes from the distance, then the loud creaking of trees and eventually the flutter of crows into the sky followed by one lone rainbowed bird to slowly rise then sutter and fall, never to bee seen again. At that moment my eyes widen and tears fall along with a soundless screach from my lips. Quickly my mother is at my side scooping me up and soothing me wispering words of comfort into my ear as I burrow my head into her neck letting her red hair block me from view of the others and her warm vinilla like scent wash over me until I finally fall asleep.

That day was the day in which my own life changed and my own personal hero had dissapeared into the forest as many before her had done in search of answers to the light beyond the forest, the light that was far in the distance that seemed to be calling to so many of us, but to which only a few of us actually responded.
