Felix wasn't sure how she wanted to handle her lie. She hadn't forgiven Andy. She actually wanted to kick him in the balls, but she didn't want him to suspect she had bolted. Her only choice was to wing it.
"Hey, you get there in one piece?"
"Yeah, but I've been a wreck since I left Chicago." Andy's voice echoed out of the phone like a ghost from her past. It made her stomach hurt. "I can't stop thinking about what happened. I don't want you to hate me. I would give anything to undo the last twenty-four hours."
"I really don't want to talk about that, right now. Are you at a hotel? Are you alone?"
"Yes and no. Shane's in the bathroom. I took the opportunity to slip onto the balcony. Baby, where are you? Your GPS isn't active. I've been worried."
Damn. The GPS. Felix glanced at Ryan through her peripherals. He was watching her like a hawk. "I know, I turned it off. I needed to get away from the house for a bit, and I didn't want assholes following me."
"What? Now, I'm really worried. Where are you?"
"I took Precious to Lapham Peak."
"Lapham Peak! By yourself? What if you got in an accident? I really need you to turn your GPS on so I can keep track of you. I should have had you come with me."
"We both know why that was a bad idea. I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself."
"What should I tell Shane? He's going to ask where you are. He's going to want to see the GPS signal. The nosy bastard." Andy was panicking. She heard it in his voice, rising to the level of a sparrow on helium.
"Just tell him the truth. He can't do a damn thing about it from Miami."
"No, but he can have Jordy or Carlos track you down. They're naturally suspicious, especially with the shit that just went down."
"You call them suspicious, I call them assholes."
Felix leaned against the wall of Ryan's apartment building while she waited for Andy to figure out his next angle. She was also using the bricks as support. "I need to go, baby," Andy whispered into the phone. "Please be careful. I'll try to distract Shane from asking about you. We're both pretty beat, but be prepared to answer the phone if he calls, and tell him the truth. I love you."
"You be careful, too." Felix choked back the desire to say I love you. The pain was too raw. She hung up the phone and Ryan's hand came to rest on her shoulder, forcing her to meet his eyes. They were searching her again. He was probably trying to decide if he wanted to help an idiot.
"I take it that was your boyfriend."
"And he keeps track of you through GPS on your phone?"
She nodded, feeling more like an idiot every second. "I disabled it as soon as I left the house."
"Is he the only one who tracks you that way?"
"Yes, but the other guys ask occasionally because they're suspicious assholes."
"Do you live alone with your boyfriend?"
"Yes, but the assholes are there almost every day."
"So, how long do you think it will take them to notice you're not coming home?"
Felix's gut was the first to provide the answer. It tended to groan when she got anxious. "Not very long."
