My Friday nights were usually filled with anything but despair, but on this particular occasion I couldn't help feeling gloomy. What had been a tradition over the years to spend the weekend at my best friend Callie's house, had now come to an end as I prepared to spend my last weekend there.

I always loved the Hendricks Household. Ruby Hendricks, Callie's mother, was quirky and fun. She had beautiful golden curls much like Callie herself, and her green eyes were always filled with the hint of an eccentric idea or project she was working on.

Her father, Landon Hendricks, worked for the government in some way, though I wasn't entirely sure how. He'd come home late at night, often worn out, but he'd always make the effort to check in on Callie before retreating to the lounge room for the evening.

Up until now, Callie and I had attended an elementary school together. But now, we were splitting up, as I went off to Pendrana's Ladies College, and Callie moved towns to attend a boarding school in the country of Scotland! Can you believe it? I certainly couldn't, when I first found out. I couldn't understand why she had to move so far away!

She still hadn't told me the name of the place either. She guarded all the details about her new school like a secret that would kill her should she ever spill it.

I tried not to think about that though. Tonight... no, this weekend, I wanted to focus on our friendship. The last time we'd be together for a long time.

Dumping my bag at the steps, I rang the doorbell to their quaint little townhouse. It was similar to ours, but while ours hadn't been redone in about thirty years, they had made an effort to add color and life to theirs.

Ruby opened the door and beamed at me. "Oh Alyssa, I'm so glad you're here! The cupcakes are almost done and I need my prized decorator!"

I couldn't help but smile. I was pretty good at decorating cakes. My mum worked at the bakery and she always needed help after school. I was whisked into the house and down the hall, where Callie was in her usual cheerful mood. She hummed along to a song on the radio and her face was speckled with dabs of flour. She spotted me and immediately held up a tray of freshly baked chocolate cupcakes, singing 'Ta-Da!'.

"Wow, they smell amazing!" I told the pair, who were beaming proudly at their little masterpiece.

"Aw, thank you Aly," Ruby gushed. "Now, I'll just grab the icing from the fridge and we can get right down to it."

The afternoon went by at a steady pace. We laughed and danced and showed off our decorated cupcakes to Landon when he came home from work. He was already taking off his tie and left it with his suitcase in the hall, seeming to have no desire to focus on work anymore now that he was in our presence.

The four of us retreated to the back yard, to munch on our cupcakes and watch the sun set. I couldn't help but watch Callie and her parents. They were usually quite a cheerful bunch, but something seemed to have them in an even more cheerful mood lately. Ruby cuddled with Landon and they both chatted happily with us. Callie's smile never left her face, and her mood refused to be spoiled, even when the sprinklers came on unexpectedly and drenched us all.

It wasn't until later that Callie and I headed upstairs to her room. She was still covered in flour and her clothes were a little damp from running amuck in the sprinkler, but she disregarded all of this and collapsed on her bed.

"So, should we watch a movie?" Callie suggested.

"Sure," I replied, smiling. She wandered over to her laptop, and I hovered by her bed, a frown settling on my face. After the wonderful afternoon, I couldn't help feeling a little sad again.
