Kita stood in the hanger looking out on The Mass. She wondered if she would miss it. Right now, she couldn't wait to be rid of it.
Sarin nudged her. "Hey Babe, you with us?"
"Yeah, sorry..." Kita looked at the group assembled in front of her. Tina, Snowy, Megan, Jewels, Amber, Paladin, Saint, and her commanders stood waiting for her. "Are you sure you don't want to come with us?" Kita offered again.
Everyone shook their heads. Kita gulped hard, she suddenly didn't want to leave half her family. With tears in her eyes she and the others said goodbye.
"Good luck, Commandant," Kita whispered to Amber.
"Thanks, have fun out there. Bring me back something cool." The Emerald angel smiled and kissed Kita on the cheeks.
"Take care of her," Kita ordered Clyde, who smiled as Kita hugged him. "You be safe out there."
"I will," Kita assured him.
Next Kita went to Megan and Paladin. "I'm sorry for everything. I know you both worked hard."
"It's alright girl. They'll survive, they always have. You take care. It's dangerous out there. I don't care what you are."
Kita nodded. "Take care of her," Kita smiled at Paladin.
"Of course. I wouldn't dream of doing anything else."
Kita hugged and kissed them both and moved on to Jewels and Saint. "Have you decided what you're going to do?"
"We're not sure. Stay here and study and learn for a while," said Saint.
Kita nodded. "Good plan. Knowledge is a powerful tool."
She said goodbye and came to her sister. "Sure you don't want to come?"
"Nope. The Arconians need a leader and this world needs some good in it."
"Alright, don't say I didn't try. Take care of yourself."
"I will. Hurry home," Tina said starting to cry.
Kita stood in front of Pershing and returned the man's salute. "I wish I'd gotten to know you for longer."
"What you plan on being away that long? With what you gave me I don't plan on dying for thousands of years."
"Don't worry. I'll take good care of your people. Razor's Reef and that piece of the ship will make a nice base of operations for us."
"I know you'll do a better job than me."
"Ha. You just be home before the mutiny."
Kita giggled and hugged him. Slowly she said goodbye to all the others, Delta Seven, Forrester, Frostbane, and Genghis.
Finally she came to the goodbye she'd been dreading.
"Are you sure?" Kita asked Snowy again.
"This is my home, Kitten. There's a lot that needs done and Amber's going to need help. I'll miss you. Keep yourself safe and come back to me," Snowy ordered with tears streaking her fur.
"I will, I promise."
Snowy grabbed her face and kissed her for a long time. "You break it and that'll be the last one you get."
"Well..." Kita caught Sarin's amused look, "...You know me, I always want more."
"Good," Snowy smiled.
Stepping back Kita walked over to a crate and picked up several boxes. Each had a handwritten label on it. One by one Kita passed one to each of the remaining angels. "Go ahead, open them."
They did, revealing a choker with a small gemstone in their color set in a silver setting. There were four quarter arcs and a circle.
"In the event you need to reach me you can use this transmitter. You all need to agree and the five pieces need to be assembled. Just speak the code phrase on the back and it will send a message to me. We'll return as fast as we can."
Each girl put it on and smiled.
Kita looked the group over and smiled. "I'll miss you."
Behind her Katie, Nina, Sarin, and Thorn changed into clouds. Nina, Thorn, and Sarin slowly settled on Anthrax and the twins.
"Come on, Babe," Sarin prodded.
Kita nodded and did the same. Together the five clouds slowly drifted upward through the hanger's roof. Once outside, they plotted a course to a nearby star and settled in for the journey.
Looking out into space, Kita admired the stars and watched the nameless planet disappear behind her. She wondered how long it would take to get to the nearest star. Not that it mattered. Out here nothing mattered, not even time.
Not the end...
