love lessons

There's this guy I used to know
We all used to know, actually,
A Jeff, a Mark, a name we all forgot,
After months of blissful torture,
And tear-jerking days,
It all boils down to one conversation
That changes the game.

"Let's make this work"
That's code for danger zone
I knew it the first time he said it
With the least conviction in his eyes
And a dead-pan voice that set off the alarms in my panicky little mind

A week later, he calls and says "this doesn't feel right"
I should have seen it coming,
The red flag was already hoisted high
Yet, I couldn't contain my surprise
When he called it off
Guess I wasn't a shot,
Worth fighting for

Few months pass
And I'm good to go
Moved on from a tweenage heart-break
That's mostly just for show
Then at the usual party, we cross paths
And it happens all over again
The lights in his murky brown eyes are back

"I did you wrong" he says
Trying to sound Shakespearean
And woo me in all his grace
I stand, frozen,
To one spot the entire time
Trying to work out
The wheels in my ever-calculating mind

"Am I a game to you? That you can play on and off?"
His eyes lose their shine
I tell him I've written him off
Something in my rejection
Fuels his unsuccessful tries.

It's nice to be in power
To say no
To a douche who thinks he has
All the control.

Maybe, girls, you'll learn
Over years of lessons and time
Spent chasing after guys
Who aren't worth a dime.
