By the time I got to the door, some of the Pokémon were giving me pitying, surprised looks. Others just stayed their distance, a wary look on their faces. heard a Ponyta whisper, "That Pokémon is either very brave, or has a death wish."
Before walking inside, I shook off the nervousness. The mayor couldn't be that bad, could he? These Pokémon were probably just cowards.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the door and walked inside.
The first thing that caught my eyes was the sheer size of the place. It looked much smaller from the outside, but maybe it had just been because of the houses around it. Inside the house, there was only a table, and a hearth rug, A fireplace was in the back of the room, between two doors. In the center of the room, a Persian was pacing, his tail lashing and fur bristling.
He seemed to caught up in his thoughts to notice me, and I cleared my throat.
The Persian's head jerked towards me, his green eyes narrowing. I tried my best not to look scared as he stalked over to me, but instead tried to look indifferent.
"Who are you?" The Persian growled and I gulped. He sounded like he was ready to skin me. Forcing away the fear, I was about to tell him my name. Then I stopped myself. What if the Guild heard of this? Lance thought I was missing. He'd think I was still out there somewhere. It didn't matter if he saw the rock fall, he would still force himself to believe I was alive and well. And if he heard that a Skitty named Stormy who was wearing orange bows had rescued someone, he would instantly know it was me. No, I needed an alias.
Thinking quickly, I said, "My name is...Holly." The first name that came to mind was what I said. 'Well," I thought unhappily, 'I guess that's what I'll go by from now on.'
The Persian nodded, his eyes narrowed. "What are you doing here?" He asked, "Are you here to find my daughter?!" I heard a desperate edge to his voice, and his tail began lashing even faster.
I nodded, sitting down. My legs were trembling from nervousness, and I didn't want it to show. I raised a paw to one of my bows, seeking comfort in them. "Yes. But I need to know where to look." I forced myself to meet the mayor's gaze. His eyes were cold, but I thought I saw a flash of relief in their depths.
"I can't tell you that."
I felt a flash of annoyance. Well, that's oh-so helpful--
"But my son can."
I sighed in relief. Good, I thought. I wouldn't be going about this blindly.
The Persian turned back to one of the doors, shouting, "Jack! Get out here!" I winced at the volume of his voice, wishing he didn't have to yell so loud. I was fairly sure that his son could have heard him at half that volume.
I flicked my ears as I heard scuffling noises coming from behind one of the doors. A moment later, a Meowth opened the door, walking up to us.
He looked about my age, though slightly taller than me , at least as he walked on all fours. A blue bandana was tied around his neck loosely.
"Yes?" The Meowth named Jack sat down. His voice was short, and the air crackled with tension.
I shifted my paws, slightly uncomfortable. There was obviously some tension between father and son, which bothered me. I always had hated being in between other Pokémon's problems. This case made me feel like I was intruding on something.
"This Pokémon has volunteered to find your sister." The Persian(I decided to call him Mayor, for lack of a name) said, jerking his head towards me. I nodded slightly, raising a paw in greeting. "I want you to show her where you last saw her."
